What causes the odyssey magnets to break?  Came out in 4 pieces.  I purchased last week a Santa Fe Alco S-2 switcher new in box and in shipping box, but old stock.  Ran it for a few minutes last week everything was fine.  Last night started to run it again, in command only has 2 speeds run or stop.  In conven it runs fine.   Wheels and pick-up rolls show no signs of being on the track.  .  I can't complain to much got it for just over $200. but it would be nice to last more than a week before repairs.

Unless you're equipped to pull the flywheel, you'll probably be better off just picking up a motor with the encoder and magnet, they go for around $26-32, depending on the specific model.  The magnet and replacement flywheel for fixing the magnet goes for around $12 for the set as I recall.  Without a wheel puller that is sized for the job, it's pretty difficult to convince the old flywheel to come off.

John,

Regarding the Pioneer Zephyr and broken ring, I have posted the dimensions of the worm gear along with a picture. Unfortunately in my case and many others, the replacement motors are not listed as available. Where does one obtain a wheel puller that will do this job. The standard O and STD pullers that I have will not work.

If you had a puller then getting the flywheel and magnet might make sense. Having to buy a puller plus the repair parts (don't forget shipping) gets you close to just going for a Cruise M. With the Cruise M you can forget about broken magnets in the future.

BTW Frank Timko and Micro Mark sell pullers that would work.

Hi Eric,

Read your earlier thread on the Zephyr, pulling the worm off with out destroying the rest of the motor/flywheel is near impossible. Let alone putting it on the new motor with board and flywheel.

I have had the same issue with a past thread and that powered B unit is now a dummy B unit.

I would call Lionel and see if in fact they can or cannot provide you with the new motor with the worm, sensor, and flywheel intact as an assembly...

Guys, in many cases with Lionel parts you are better off to buy the motor with the flywheel, ring, and new board in one unit.  I have pulled many a flywheel in my life and yes you can save a few bucks.  Buy the whole package and be done.  In many applications you can not buy the parts and need to buy everything together.

Yep, great minds think alike...

Fellows,

Thanks for your input. As I already noted, Lionel does not have the motor/sensor available. Pulling the gear and pressing it onto the matching MTH motor in hand, while daunting maybe the only fix for me. I will contact Lionel before proceeding.

Eric, You need the magnet flywheel, no? An MTH motor won't help help here. Replace the flywheel on your motor and keep the gear where it is. You still need a puller.

I made mine from square tubing.

Pete,

Nice job on the puller. I apologize for the highjack on this thread. Note the earlier post about the Pioneer Zephyr. The existing motor is damaged. I'm not concerned about the flywheel, because I can use an ERR cruise M. I just got off the phone with Lionel and they indicated that the Legacy motor is not interchangeable which is surprising, different sensor not withstanding. Lionel told me to contact Frank Timko.

The good thing about Frank's puller is that it has adjustable arms so you can neck it down for different size FW, wheels and even worm gears.

Funny how when you build snowflakes sooner or later regardless how good your part website is you still have parts issues.  Seems like we are starting to hit the end of life cycle on some of the early modular TMCC and Legacy engines.  G

I ordered the Timko puller, and I did ask about worm gears.   He said that's going to be difficult with this puller in most cases.

His solution to gears?  He cuts the shaft and puts the gear on a press and pushes the shaft out.  His feeling is the motor is bad if you want to take off the gear, so no reason to save it.

Carl,

That is not the same motor, flywheel, or pinion. Fortunately Frank Timko was able to replace the motor and I received it yesterday. I am very pleased with Frank's work and quick turn around. I expect to have the Zephyr running in the next hour.

This post has a title asking about a Santa Fe S-2. The Zephyr post is another engine, isn't it?
