Perusing the used bookstore shelves, I found the book RDC by Duke and Keilty describing the history and evolution of the Rail Diesel Car.  It mentions the shotweld process for joing stainless steel parts, which I in turn Googled for more information and pictures.  Here is an interesting February 1947 Popular Science article showing how those stainless steel cars are fabricated, including pictures of a shotwelder device.
