I built a small tabletop 027 layout for my grandson when he turned 4. It was just two basic loops on a 4x9, using items from my old stash of 027 items. This year at Christmas he turned 5 1/2, and the little layout , while fun for a while, was starting to get boring for him I think. So, I am now in rebuild mode. A few photos are attached. The table has been extended to 5x9, and a new, more interesting track plan was found, thanks to help from one of our forum member. The table has been repainted with a basic "dirt brown" color, and tracklaying is under way. There will be room for several action accessories I have in my old collection. Here are a few photos of the progress, starting with the old layout and the new plan.

Building for a grandson is always fun! I bought several Chuggington engines and have it so both grandkids can watch their trains running. Having several accessories which are interactive, a station siding and the ability to keep their interest works well.
Have a great time, and enjoy the time honored Grandfather/grandkids quality time!!!!
Looks good. Gotta keep the fun going for the Grandkids.
Well, after a long hot summer, I got back to work on the layout. It is in the garage, and by late May, it got too hot there to work. It was well over 80 each morning, and often got up to over 100 in there.
Today I finally finished the main line. Those Lionel graduated trestle sets are a real pain to install. When I was a kid, I only had a Marx set, and they went together in a flash. Not so with the Lionel and all the "U" shaped bracket and tiny screws I can barely see. This afternoon I will hook up some power, and give the main a test run. I have to clean the rails again first.
Oh, I believe it takes at least half on my model railroad tools to build a layout nowadays. The layout table is just a mess of tools and supplies.
