I'll have to get some video to post! My little dock sider can really cloud up the basement!

I also love smoke. And maybe I'm sick between the ears but the coal fired scent is definitely my favorite.

Like your MTH steam switcher Arnold ... my MTH Y6b stack spews the smoke!

MTH knows how to make a smoke unit.

Puts out a great deal of smoke for such a little engine. Particularly when it's going under structures. I do notice that sometimes it smokes more than others. Not sure what the deal is with that.

the only thing stock about that locomotive are the wheels it sits on, .....it’s all modified,.........some of us can’t leave things stock,.....😉....it goes against the fabric of our being,....

One of the reasons that Mohawk smoke looks so good has to do with the lighting in the video.

Here's a little photo/video lesson in lighting...

When you want to to show off a locomotive's smoke capabilities, make sure you have some light coming from behind the locomotive...from the back of the scene.  In a typical front-lit scene, the smoke will just blend in with the background. With just a little back lighting, the smoke will stand out from the background and look much more impressive.

Yeah Rich!...I meant for that to happen!....actually, that’s a big fat lie, ....if the lighting was correct, that’s purely coincidental,....😁😁😁.....but I’ll take the win and run like H-E double toothpicks,.....

I do love the smoking engines. I know it is supposed to attract dust and mess up weather but man...I can't get enough of it.

I totally agree with Rich Melvin's post. Before I read it, I coincidentally made this video and was pleased with how the smoke mixed with the natural light at dusk that came in from the window behind the MTH Proto 2 PennsyTurbine.

After reading Rich's post, I now know why the smoke is so striking in the video. Pay particular attention to the end of this 49 second video. Arnold

Here's my original prototype Super-Chuffer equipped locomotive, it's an old PS/1 MTH Camelback that I upgraded to TMCC and used as my test bed almost seven years ago.

How about the Hogwart's Express with real smoke?

Now that many modern diesel locos also spew smoke, there should be "equal time" for showing them in action. Also, now that there are scented smoke fluids available, several smoke options are available for locos whether wood-burning, coal-burning, or oil-burning locos. I have "coffee scented" smoke fluid for use with STELLA'S DINER!

Some local train clubs that sponsor train shows suspend smoking locos as a consideration for young visitors who have have asthma or breathing-related medical problems. Following that practice, I don't put smoke fluid in any of the locos on my home layout for the sake of others.

However, there is a pre-existing "blank" ceiling vent in the Train Room. I intend to install an exhaust fan there so I can "have my smoke and expel it too."

SO, so, it's the new technology, with high output smoke generators. Traditional Lionel smoke-puffers do make very kewl smoke rings on a good day... and I like the ones that smell like baby-powder. Ill try that dark background and back lighting. The smoke generators/fans/sounds/smooth-pulling new engines are pretty kewl.

Did someone say diesel smoke?  When too much is just enough.

My new Legacy ATSF 3751 class Northern can really put out a cloud of smoke.

Once again, look at the back lighting in Lou1985's video clip. That's what makes the smoke really stand out.
