Two new items:  The Amtrak F59PHI is replacing the Amtrak Acela on the overhead layout.  The Acela wasn't pulling as before, when running more than a half hour at one time.  I checked everything, lubed everything, cleaned everything.  The inside doesn't even have a spec of dust after 5 years.  The motor was trying to pull, tires weren't spinning, and a little push would get it going again, but, not for long.   Please let me know if you have any ideas.

The F59 looks and runs great, and I love those silver trucks.  You can just see the Acela, parked on my long spur.

I replaced the old, original 1950's station with this new, plug and play.  The New Haven colors and sign convinced me.  The action is cool.  I chopped the Lionel power three-prong plug, first time I've done that, because I needed to combine the wires leading to the kiosk.

If you noticed the missing pantograph, fear not, all is well.  It popped off when I was cleaning the engine.  Back now.

Did you disassemble the trucks to put the eye on the gears.  A lot going on there.  I have 2 sets and they run a lot better after red and tacky grease.

Menards billboard arrived and it looks pretty good! And worth a mention b/c I haven't seen it posted elsewhere: there's nothing preventing you from inserting the included decals with the backing still on, making replacement a 10 second job. Everything's cut-to-size and there's no watermark on the backing. To my (still pretty good) eyes, the display's only a hair dimmer. As these billboards are already plenty bright, it's hardly an issue.

Also rec'd a a bunch of Menards boxcars. As you can see, I'm an unfaithful tramp when it comes to lines.

I have what is easily my most extravagant accessory purchase awaiting delivery (from an ORG sponsor to boot!); very excited to see & show when it arrives.

One of my favorite caboose types is the PRR designed N8. I already had examples of the PRR and Conrail varieties and now I've added this Penn Central version. Interesting note: the white stripe along the side represents an early PC scheme.  The white stripe was later eliminated as a cost saving measure. Yes, money really was that tight.

That's a great engine Larry. I have a bunch of K-line MP-15's and I love em. I will note that I've re-wired mine in series to slow them down below light speed.

Dropped into Legacy Station on Saturday to (only) pick up a pre-ordered MTH Railking Stone Mountain Railroad GP9 but the missus had other ideas - I guess I am truly blessed that the missus encourages me rather than the alternative!

The engine sounds and runs great - my only (slight) criticism is the green is a bit too "pea" for my taste and is a few shades off from the real deal. Still, happy with the locomotive overall!

New Woodland Scenics fence system - pretty happy with how they look and how easy they are to install. We picked up two kits, one for our station platform (seen here) and one to serve as a dog park - I still need to paint the dog park ones black:

We've been toying with the idea of a water tower in the back corner of our layout and the wife immediately located the new Woodland Scenics one on the shelf, so it came home with us as well:

And lastly, a set of LED-donning MTH Railking reefers - I had been toying with the idea of getting a set since first seeing them before the holidays but held off. Once the wife saw them all lit up, the decision was made:

I recently purchased a Lionel AC6000 CSX Diversity engine #5000. I wondered why its' original MSRP was so high but once I received it, I began to understand. First, it is very heavy and longer than a SD70Ace, plus it has two speakers for great sound and it has tons of intricate detail. It is one heck of a smoker and runs very smoothly 👍. The real icing on the cake was I got it for almost half off due to the dealer wanting to get rid of old stock.IMG_20200127_154645IMG_20200127_154733IMG_20200127_154800IMG_20200127_154712

Unfortunately, I got the last one and I kinda feel like kicking myself because they actually had both #5000 and #5001 for sale at a.great price and by the time I checked again #5001 was gone. Your layout is very impressive 👏.

I've been assembling some equipment to put together a modern-ish intermodal train.  My inspiration is the BNSF Lindenwood Yard.  That yard is adjacent to I-44 here in St. Louis.  It was a Frisco yard originally.  I drive past it frequently.  There are usually dozens of engines there.  I'm not a fan of the modern orange BNSF paint scheme.  I usually see some old BN and Santa Fe engines there so that's what I'm going with.  Two new MTH engines and some used rolling stock:

Thanks, there's a helpful intermodal thread here on OGR from 2016 that coincidentally got bumped today.  There is some good information there as far as pointing out the differences between MTH, Lionel, Atlas, and K-Line.  I settled on MTH really because their Premier huskys seem close to (or are?) scale.  Also, it seems like the MTH Premier intermodal stuff can be had cheaper (relative to Lionel and Atlas anyway) on the secondary market.  IOW, good balance of scale size, nice detail, and price.

Jerry- the kits come with a harness (pictured), that has a resistor included. The LED's are 3V rated and the resistor allows for use on higher voltages. I have several different lighting circuits on the layout. These will be on a 6V circuit so I will use the resistors. I bought their mulit-led strings that I use for Christmas lights. These are battery powered.

I managed to score this beautiful Lionel LEGACY model of the famous Union Pacific FEF-3 Northern from another forum member, and in my personal favorite scheme she was in - as no. 8444 with the silver boiler front and trim. I knew I had to complete it with a matching set of UP passenger cars, which are by MTH, and also bought from another forum member.

It makes a truly impressive train. Gotta love the whistle steam effect. I at first thought I would prefer the original LEGACY version’s whistle, but after having it in person, the new version’s whistle has grown on me a lot.

Scored 2 items this week!  First is an MTH 2500HP Baldwin transfer diesel dummy.  These are surprisingly hard to find and my plan is to gut another MTH engine to power it up.  Just what I need, another project!

Second is the 2003 version of the NYC L2a Mohawk.  This is a gorgeous engine and I got it for a song!  My grandson has been running it non-stop for 2 days now.

I was helping a friend with an estate and he gifted me an envelope of little metal signs.  Turns out it was an almost complete set of Post (?) A parts order from Lionel finally arrived today for an engine I purchased a month ago. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to announce that I am the owner of the best O Scale diesel that ever came out. The Lionel GE Evolution Hybrid, I've been on the hunt for one of these for 10 years now and I finally have one to call my own. I saw this come up on eBay last month as an auction and to my surprise I won it. But it needed a bit of work, which I was 100% willing to do. Two stanchions were broken on either side (replaced with brand new ones), the grill on the rear radiator fell off (so I needed to get a whole new radiator section), and the chain on the rear truck was missing (I fixed that with a 5 dollar chain I found on eBay). Now she's in mint condition!

IMG_2162

I am glad to finally own this model, it was well worth waiting 10 years and well worth the work to get it to mint condition! All functions work perfectly by the way.

I won these off eBay, just got them today. I have two others just like them, they're AMS On30 boxcars. The problem is, the couplers are at On3 height, way higher than On30.
Naturally, they're going to need to be stripped, repainted, then relettered. It's almost a crying shame, because they each have different serial numbers.
But there's no way Rio Grande Rolling Stock is going to stay on this layout!

I also got this in the mail yesterday, my author copy. I had submitted an article about military railroads and Narrow Gauge, specifically slanted for On30. I like how it turned out.

I got this book off Amazon, two days ago. Ever since I was over in Europe back in 1988, I’ve always had an interest in Dutch railroads. The first book on the subject I've been able to find in English.

Screenshot_2020-04-20-14-50-31-01

Over 30 years later, I now doubt I’ll ever set foot on Dutch soil again, even though I’d love to go back there, especially in the summer time.

At the time, I was quite unfamiliar with the country and its culture, but in a pre-internet era where I didn’t even know which books to order to read more, I went and figured it all out. Heck, I couldn’t even find myself on a map half the time I was there but it was an amazing time.

Anyway, it’ll be neat to read about this.

Pennsylvania Coal Train Set 6-31749imageimageimageimageDiecast hoppers are heavy. The Railsounds 5.0 are fantastic. It’s the nicest diesel I own. The set was factory sealed and in MINT condition, except where the USPS dropped it on the same corner of the box where the GP30 was and damaged it. I can fix it. Just a broken wind deflector on the cab window and warped railing. I get tired of having to fix everything I buy. There’s not any real nice dealers around me anymore.

I purchased a Lionel SF F3 set ABBA from a member here, motored A&B unites and dummy A&B units and a bunch of spline and  container cars. I only have the SF set pictured here ABA. Well for starters as you can see I never would have fit the ABBA on my countertop! LOL And second, I actually forgot I purchased the extra B unit, Oops! I always wanted the SF F3 set to compliment my Postwar NYC F3 set which has a postwar modified dual motor B unit. So while not postwar, not even close, at last I have both sets.

This is the unit that ran E T & W N C locomotive numbers 10 and 14 during World War II. I'm not too keen on the digital camouflage on the back, but it's a nice hat which should wear pretty well in warm weather.

Given my interest in military railroads, it was a must have...

Being the lover of Hudson's that I am it was inevitable that eventually I would buy Lionel's version (777) at some point.  Well one came up on Ebay for $250 plus shipping that I could not pass up.  It arrived today and looks like it has never been run!  After pre maintenance checks and lubrication I put it on the track for break in running.

Here is a picture of my oldest grandson running it.  The whistle is indeed as great as i have been told!

62D12CBE-2425-4DCB-9C31-5913DF372E0AJust got the 4-car MTH Madison passenger car set! I had the starter set with 3 of these cars and the 2-8-0 (PS-2), but had to sell it about 10 years ago...

I figured these would be a good fit for the atlas O industrial rail 4-4-2 I have. Well, these cars are a bit bigger (and heavier) than I remember... they’re a bit too much for the Atlantic to handle... guess I’ll have to start thinking about a K4 or GG1...

Got this 2-pack of Lionel Frisco 86' Hi-cube Boxcars from Nassau Hobby's, so far they perform great. Yes I know Frisco doesn't exist anymore, but I think these still look great behind any modern loco in my collection. The scheme really stands out from all the rest of the rolling stock that I have, and well, the fact that they are so much bigger than almost every scale piece of rolling stock that has ever been made.IMG_2232

I am most likely not gonna get anymore of these cars, since they already take up a ton of space in my storage room. I was considering getting 2 Lionel scale Autoracks, but after seeing how much space these take up. I don't think I will be buying those any time soon. Don't get me wrong, I still really like these cars, I just can't buy anymore as of right now.

I do quite a bit of modeling on the coffee table in the LR, so at the same time my wife watches TV, and I listen... The problem is the table is low and after bending over for a period of time it kills my back.  My wife found this rising desk at "Gromet".  It is 24" X 27", rises 3, 6, 10, and 14 inches.  It is the perfect heights for scratch building.  Plenty of room for tools and equipment.  a 18" X 22" cutting mat fits perfect with room to spare.  Great for taking photos of your models as well, very easy to get the perfect eye level shots that look realistic like the magazine ads... $85.00 and free shipping..

Raising desk 1

The 3 inch position'.

Raising desk 2

The 10 inch position, and there is one more at 14 inches...  Very solid and weighs 27 pounds.  The mechanism button on the right side/top, works very well.  This is a great product, and makes my building of structures and projects much more comfortable for me to accomplish'....

I got this in the mail today, I wasn't expecting to buy another engine this month. But after seeing this come up on Nicholas Smith Trains, I had to get it before it vanished. I am really surprised that they somehow got one after being out of production for like 3 years. I guess they randomly found it in their warehouse. In any case, I am glad I picked this thing up. It's really nice and operates really close to the real NPCUs. Also, it works perfectly!

This engine will be accompanied by 5 Atlas O Amtrak Phase III Horizon cars, along with my Atlas O Amtrak Dash 8 (in the Pepsi Can scheme). Once I get the cars interior lights upgraded to LEDs and get my Dash 8 back to full working order. Dash 8 will have to wait a while, since I will need to order parts from Lionel to fix it.

Oops, didn't notice it was the Cabbage unit.

You're right, the only issue I had with that one was the number board intensity and the coupler rot from the acid lubricant they used.

I did have to take the shell off in order to pop the control switch cover, the number boards being rather dim doesn't really bother me. And the coupler problem is non-existent. Although the rear air hoses broke off in transit (one was already stashed away with the Kadee coupler hardware). Not really bothered by that, I won't even know they are missing during normal operation. At least it works perfectly and is almost flawless.

The reason the number boards bothered me was those were really dim, and the powered unit number boards were like headlights!  It turned out there was a 22:1 difference in the current to the number boards in the two units.  I picked an intensity I like for the powered unit and then made the Cabbage unit match.  It was just a one resistor change.

Yes I have seen your post related to that when I was doing a ton of research on the Cabbage units. Mainly seeing how common the electronics failed. I know of 2 Youtubers who had that failure. One had the electronics fail because they were moving around wires while they had it powered on. The other one was a complete failure out of the blue (I believe). I don't have access to a soldering iron at home, so the fix will have to be done at my work once businesses open up again.

I watched two of the powered F40PH units go up in smoke.  After seeing the first one weeks before, we were at a club function and a club member was running his when I saw the lights flickering.  I warned him that he should stop and we could fix it, but he kept running.  About two more loops and it stopped with smoke pouring out where smoke should not be coming from.  Yes, it was stopped, and that was a permanent situation.

Question: Is this topic so popular because (most) of our significant others don’t get excited when we show them the new train OR because we can’t show them we bought ANOTHER train!! Just pondering.....interested to hear your thoughts.  For me it’s probably both!

It’s definitely nice to share with people who appreciate the excitement of a new purchase! So thank you!

Gerhardt, You may have hit on something.  My wife gets briefly excited about some of my purchases but her response to others is ho hum.  Yes, it is nice to post here where we know someone will appreciate what we purchased.

Well look what came today!  A second Premier PS2 H9 I bought from a friend.  This one is a little different in that it started out with Erie livery and the previous owner lettered it for WM.  He left the cab roof black and the smokebox gray, but I like it in that it looks a little different from the factory painted #821 I already have.

Being a lover of toy sets, I added the Blue Comet set. I must say, this is one of the best starter sets Lionel has produced in a long while. The sounds are great, and the extra passenger car that is an announcement car really makes the set— including the conductor with illuminated lantern. Lots o’ fun in this one! Here I’m operating via the hand control. I set up settings in the app— smoke on, high momentum, then switched to hand controller.

It looks awesome Larry!  I was able to Pre Order the Lionel Trump SD70ACE last night.  Nice to know exactly what  it will look like and very tempting to try and buy a Bush 4141 non powered to run with it.  Hard part for me will be what the heck will I pull with em as I don't really have a pile of modern rolling stock lol.  I do have some presidential boxcars so that might work although the loco's are scale and the boxcars are traditional sized.

Oh baby...I've been stalking this one for a long, long time. I guess patience is a virtue. This brand new (NOS) MTH Premier Conrail C40-8 with standard/narrow cab. Threw me a curve at first when I couldn't get it to do anything at all as though it was d.o.a. Turns out this model is equipped for 2 or 3 rail operation and for some reason the 3/2 switch was set to 2-rail from the factory. A flip of the switch and it came to life. I replaced the battery with a BCR-2, greased the gears and added a drop of smoke fluid and we're in business.

I ordered the UP "Powered by Our People" #1111 SD70AH, but I have been thinking about getting the #4141 SD70ACE non-powered version. Your model is very nice and I hope you enjoy it!

Good dat everyone, finally unpacked my latest new item from Lionel, the Sante Fe full length VistsDome StationSounds 21 in passenger car, and a few more pictures of the George Bush SD70. With my wife on work lay-off, we spent all our time working in the yard, painting the deck, garage doors, and today she’s back at work... Thanks for the nice comments on the diesel. Have a great week, and stay safe, stay healthy, pray continually. Very nice video, Larry!!  I only learned it plays Hail to the Chief last week.  The car looks great!  My wife went back to work also, but it is looking like their business may not survive.  That is because of other factors not due to the coronavirus, though that is helping bring on the inevitable.  So she may just join me in earlier than expected retirement as well.  No arguments there!  We are getting too old for this work stuff!

I finally got the RPO car for my Reading passenger train, this pretty much finishes my collection for my MTH Reading Madison passenger cars. I thought about getting the other 2 pack of cars, the baggage and coach car, but I decided there isn't really a point in getting cars that I already have. Especially since I would most likely only use the coach car from that 2 pack.

Hi guys! My name is John, and I am new around these parts. Just getting back into the hobby after a 45 year absence. My three year old son loves this stuff as I did when I was a boy. His first engine is a 1956(?) Lionel GP-7 Milwaukee Road #2338 that my grandfather gave my dad when he was just a boy. My dad passed it along to me and now the 4th generation is getting to experience this very same locomotive.

My most recent aquisition for the collection is the Lionel JLC Legacy Big Boy #4012, which was acquired new in the box just last week. I still don't have the minimum curve set needed to run it, but they are on the way. I am looking to build an outdoor run for the trains as our home is not suited to allow for a large O-scale layout, unless I scrap my two channel music room, which is NOT about to happen.

Thanks for the great forum, and I look forward to learning more.

Welcome to the forum John.  Sounds like a good start.  We will be here to help you WHEN you start planning the demo of the 2 channel music room😂. Always have fun and enjoy the locomotive you recently acquired.

Cool yes...Had a split system head installed in train room for heat and AC, goodbye ugly old window unit. Great buy $390 for the head only as I already have the system in the house and was able to attached this one to it. installed it a little lower than the top of the layout in the elevated area so won't be a distraction. Going to be constant temperature year round and very little humidity. That's my "Buy Anything Cool Lately"

Got in a Nanton elevator by Altoona Model Works.  This is not a cheap kit, but l got it for a VERY good price, maybe because instructions are only on the net??  Thanks to posters here, a friend printed me instructions.  This is the last kit elevator l am aware of and did not have built. , and l have several scratch built ones, so real estate is at a premium and l need a fleet of boxcars with grain doors.  (I do like grain elevators) l  also got in another l, l think uncommon kit, a Suncoast coal tipple.  It, too, was a good price, and l think there are only two other coal tipple kits, the one out of W. Va., and MAYBE the one south of York, although some of those kits are S scale only?  SOME of the coal structures are in O. There is also a small tipple kit modeled on a mine in Illinois. My railroad is imagined as owned by a coal mining co. that went after logging, metal mining, and grain business also, as  they were happy to cash anybody's check, and are located along the Front Range with coal mines west of Pueblo, metal mines and trees in  the Rockiesd and a prairie of grain east to Kansas.  Since l am stalled by a shortage of windows and  doors on my caboose project, l don't know when l will get to building these two kits.

John, Welcome to the OGR Forum and back to the hobby.  I'm glad you are sharing the hobby with you son.  The Big Boy looks great!  Ask away on any topic or post any new topic of your own.

Sunday I received an email from Forum sponsor Mr. Muffin's Trains with one of his 'make offer' offers.  For the first time, I saw something I wanted.  I made what I thought was a ridiculously low offer, and shortly received a counter offer for only $100 more.  Well, it arrived yesterday.  It is a Legacy Western Maryland 2-6-6-2.  I know purists would say the Western Maryland Railway never had any of these.  I don't care.  I like it.  It runs good.
