It's all marketing...
Get started with the Thomas remotes...
Like that? Say, that's great.
Oh, Jr engineer-o has outgrown Thomas?
We-he-ll, lookie here. Some great sets that you can control with this here uh, CAB-1L remote.
Yes, yes, just like the Thomas set...but with much more control.
Oh, so Jr engineer-o has graduated and mom threw out all the new fangled wires, but dad kept your sets?
Ooo, well, I say, yes that IS a fine model. A-what? Oh yes! Yes indeedy it comes with a quillable whistle.
Well, you're ready for this here top of the line remote controller. Handles that fine whistle on this loco plus...all the basics to operate your old sets you ran as a youngster....

Anyone not see this multi-tiered marketing concept?

I'm guessing you don't.

The catalog claims it will support quill.  Perhaps holding the whistle button on the 1L would equate to pulling down on the whistle knob on the cab2?  IE the length of time you hold down the 1L whistle button == how far down you would pull the cab2 whistle knob.  It would allow for getting some quill action, but it wouldn't be the same for sure.  I'm just guessing though.

From the catalog:

  • Operates many LEGACY features and most TMCC equipment
  • Operates LEGACY "Real-Time Quilling Whistle/Horn" feature in LEGACY Control System equipped locomotives
  • Works with both the #992 LEGACY Base and the Base-1L (only one required per layout)
  • Addresses 99 ENG (engine) and 99 TR (train) IDs
  • Single serial-port for limited system expansion

I see it more with a button to push and at same time you play with the knob, by pressing the button you disable the throttle and you activate the whistle

That would work ok methinks!

I see this as a fantastic kid controller. The cab 1, without screens, etc.... is basically a TV remote. I already have a Cab2, but I'm going to pick one of these up, because the big red knob is easy for a child to play around with, and with just push buttons (no screens, sliders, etc....) there's far less to get broken on it in the hands of a toddler. BUT this thing still has to be cheap. I'd love to see the remote at $99.99 or less.

I am just getting back into the hobby after a 2 year train hiatus. I am looking forward to finally running my Legacy PE Berk one day, hopefully by Christmas. I bought Legacy when if first came out and tried to use it with little success, all with TMCC engines. Granted, I didn't have much time to mess with it back then, and am a little intimidated by the system with the upgrade modules. I think I have version 1.3 modules that I received from Lionel but never did anything with, and now I see there is a version 1.4 software. When I saw the Cab1L in the new catalog I thought there must be other dummies like me who want a simple and easy to use controller, like the original Cab1, that requires no modules or software upgrades. Is that what the new controller accomplishes? If so, I am in for one, unless I can figure out my existing system.

That would be crummy, similar to DCS quilling, I'm hoping the illustration is wrong and there will be a slider on the remote for the whistle.

Not sure if this is mentioned in the catalog but one advantage of the Legacy system is the multiple channels. So if several groups at a show are operating they can operate on different frequencies. Without this feature I think the product falls short.

Even the old TMCC system could have the crystals replaced to allow for different frequences.

I don't know whether it has this feature or not all I said was there is no mention of it in either the catalog or the separate information sheet when you Google 37147. I tried to find the manual but it is not available on line.

I can't imagine they would design this product without this feature.
