UPDATE AND SOLUTION

When using the Cab 1L and Legacy engines............if pressing the #9 button does not work for turning the smoke on.

PRESS AUX 1 - then the number 9 button.  For the duration of your operating session the 8 and 9 keys function.

Page 13 of the Cab 1L Manual describes how to increase and decrease smoke volume on Legacy engines which works well.

I cannot explain why this is so, but it works.

Just purchased the Cab 1L as a back up for my Legacy remote.

All functions work on TMCC engines.  Specifically the #8 and #9 ...on / off for the smoke.

However, on my Legacy 10 Wheeler, the Cab 1L  #8 and #9 keys do not turn the smoke off or on.

If I set the smoke on via my Legacy remote then it is on with the Cab 1L.  But no control......it just stays on.

If I set the smoke off via my Legacy remote then it is off with the Cab 1L and again no control......meaning I cannot turn the smoke  on.

I've reset several times but this did not make any difference.

Any thoughts Gents?

Thank You

Thank You for your reply.

Using the Legacy remote, Legacy engine in Cab 1 mode.........no smoke control whatsoever.

Using the Cab 1L remote, Legacy engine in Cab 1 mode....no smoke control whatsoever.

I placed the engine back into Legacy mode........and smoke is fully functional with Legacy remote........but not with Cab 1L.

I put the engine smoke level at Low in Legacy and it stays the same using the Cab 1L.

However, as mentioned, I have no control of the smoke this way in Cab 1 L.

The engine just continally stays smoking.

I have a similar issue with a Legacy engine where the smoke switch has to be ON to have smoke control but it comes on every time I apply track power so I have to key in the engine ID start it up and shut it off even if I don't want to run it. If I set the switch to OFF I have no smoke control.

I have Legacy and TMCC engines and can't seem to get consistent smoke control out of any of them.

I recall an issue with the legacy smoke control with these ten wheelers when they first came out.

I'm not sure if it was on this forum or the "other" magazine forum, but folks were setting the smoke via TMCC and then would run it via legacy. Otherwise the loco was shipped back to Lionel to change the defective component, not sure if it was the regulator or another board.

Cab 1L does it's job but not with the smoke, at least for me.

Can anyone else try this and post back?

Thank You

Soo,

Sorry, but it is not the Cab1-L.  The Legacy loco should respond to the #8 or #9 key (off/on) commands.  The confirmation is when you run the Cab-2 in Cab1 mode the problem is also apparent.

From RickO's post, it must be that some Legacy locos don't seem to be working as expected.  I would contact Lionel CS and ask about your particular locos and what they recommend.

Thank You all for the replies.

I did send back my Ten Wheeler shortly after I received it back in the day for a smoke issue, in fact twice.  It does work well now in Legacy mode.

The Legacy diesel I mentioned also behaves this way.

What are the odds that I would have 2 engines with exactly the same issue.....

If anyone could run a test and see how their Legacy engines respond to the Cab 1L - 8 - 9 smoke buttons........would be extra evidence to possibly solve this issue.

Maybe it is an issue with the Cab 1L or maybe just my engines.

Thanks Again

Dave

For the CAB1, and presumable the CAB1-L, here's what the manual says.

To adjust the smoke output, bring the locomotive to a stop, press AUX1, AUX2, 9, then press L for low smoke, M for medium smoke, or H for high smoke. Press AUX2 again to complete the setting. See page 13 for the location of these buttons on the CAB-1 Remote Controller.

Your locomotive will remember its new setting until you change it again.
It may take up to a minute for the smoke unit to heat up or cool down

Have you tried a reset?

If your locomotive is unresponsive to your commands in the TrainMaster Command Control environment, we recommend that you follow this procedure to reset your locomotive. All factory default settings will be restored when you reprogram the locomotive.

1. Slide the Command reverse unit switch to the PROG position. See Figure 2 on page 11.
2. Plug in and connect your Command Base.
3. Place your locomotive and tender on the track, then power up the track.
4. Press ENG and enter the locomotive’s ID#.
5. Press SET.
6. Press ENG and enter the locomotive’s ID# again.
7. Press AUX1.
8. Enter 1 for this particular locomotive.
9. Turn off track power and wait ten seconds.
10. Slide the Command reverse unit switch back to the RUN position.

At this point, your locomotive has been reset. Restore power to the track and operate the locomotive as usual. Be sure to use the ID# entered in Step 4.
