Check out the Cab-1L in the new lionel catalog. Seems somehow familiar. I hope the price point is much lower than the cab-2.

I just don't see the benefit, but to each their own
If the price was right, like say $69 each, then I would consider getting rid of my cab1s and the tmcc1 base and go all legacy. Thus I'd have 1 full featured cab-2, plus these others for guest operators. But I'd have to understand the limitations of this new device too.
I am taking a wild guess, but I think 69 is about half of what it will sale for

Sadly, you're probably correct...
It is interesting they are offering the cab1l. I wonder what the price will be. I use my old cab1 for speeders, gantry cranes. This frees up my Legacy remotes for operating my legacy trains. If the price was good deal, I would buy the CAB1L. If it is close to the Legacy remote, then I would just buy another legacy remote.
How do you quill the whistle with a push button?
Yup, the price has to be low or I don't see a point in buying one.
Hear that Lionel?
$69.99.

I'm guessing you don't.
I will put the retail price for the CAB-1L at $149, anyone else want to hazard a guess?
I thought I already did that above (OK mine as up to 138)
$169.99
where is Marty Fitzhenry doesn't he work a charles-ro? maybe he could find out the cost. because even if it is not published they might know.
Hope Lionel has more info on this at York.
My price guesses would be $129 for the remote alone, $89 for the base unit, and $199 for remote & base combination pack. I'd also guess at $89 for Legacy Powermaster.
Hmm. So much for not being able to get the parts anymore
External parts are easy, its the various internals that became hard to get. I bet there are virtually no parts inside this one that are in the original Cab-1
Get started with the Thomas remotes...
Like that? Say, that's great.
Oh, Jr engineer-o has outgrown Thomas?
We-he-ll, lookie here. Some great sets that you can control with this here uh, CAB-1L remote.
Yes, yes, just like the Thomas set...but with much more control.
Oh, so Jr engineer-o has graduated and mom threw out all the new fangled wires, but dad kept your sets?
Ooo, well, I say, yes that IS a fine model. A-what? Oh yes! Yes indeedy it comes with a quillable whistle.
Well, you're ready for this here top of the line remote controller. Handles that fine whistle on this loco plus...all the basics to operate your old sets you ran as a youngster....
Anyone not see this multi-tiered marketing concept?

I'm guessing you don't.
The catalog claims it will support quill. Perhaps holding the whistle button on the 1L would equate to pulling down on the whistle knob on the cab2? IE the length of time you hold down the 1L whistle button == how far down you would pull the cab2 whistle knob. It would allow for getting some quill action, but it wouldn't be the same for sure. I'm just guessing though.
From the catalog:
- Operates many LEGACY features and most TMCC equipment
- Operates LEGACY "Real-Time Quilling Whistle/Horn" feature in LEGACY Control System equipped locomotives
- Works with both the #992 LEGACY Base and the Base-1L (only one required per layout)
- Addresses 99 ENG (engine) and 99 TR (train) IDs
- Single serial-port for limited system expansion
I'm not sure exactly how it would support it in nearly as nice a fashion as the CAB2, but I'll wait to see.
Maybe the whistle will be a analog push button. Rather than a digital on/off button.
Well, if it's cheap enough, I might get one as a spare. I'm guessing it's going to be more than I'm willing to pay...

I see it more with a button to push and at same time you play with the knob, by pressing the button you disable the throttle and you activate the whistle

That would work ok methinks!
I see this as a fantastic kid controller. The cab 1, without screens, etc.... is basically a TV remote. I already have a Cab2, but I'm going to pick one of these up, because the big red knob is easy for a child to play around with, and with just push buttons (no screens, sliders, etc....) there's far less to get broken on it in the hands of a toddler. BUT this thing still has to be cheap. I'd love to see the remote at $99.99 or less.
Maybe hold down the horn button and use the speed dial to control the quilling?
Boy, this guessing is almost as fun as guessing what Lionel was going to put in the new catalog!
Maybe hold down the horn button and use the speed dial to control the quilling?
it's very simple to implement
I am just getting back into the hobby after a 2 year train hiatus. I am looking forward to finally running my Legacy PE Berk one day, hopefully by Christmas. I bought Legacy when if first came out and tried to use it with little success, all with TMCC engines. Granted, I didn't have much time to mess with it back then, and am a little intimidated by the system with the upgrade modules. I think I have version 1.3 modules that I received from Lionel but never did anything with, and now I see there is a version 1.4 software. When I saw the Cab1L in the new catalog I thought there must be other dummies like me who want a simple and easy to use controller, like the original Cab1, that requires no modules or software upgrades. Is that what the new controller accomplishes? If so, I am in for one, unless I can figure out my existing system.

That would be crummy, similar to DCS quilling, I'm hoping the illustration is wrong and there will be a slider on the remote for the whistle.
Paul, I'd give the Legacy system another crack, it's really not that difficult, and you'll get the full use out of any Legacy engines.

Actually its easier, you have pictures instead of numbers. My 7 year old daughter can run my TMCC crane/boom car without a mishap.
My grandson was just five when he started using the Legacy controller, he's an old hand now at seven, and he doesn't miss a beat.
My son and I avoided Legacy for years. It looked very complicated vs. the TMCC system we had. I finally purchased the Legacy system. It's very easy to use. Wish we would've upgraded sooner.
A common experience.

Not sure if this is mentioned in the catalog but one advantage of the Legacy system is the multiple channels. So if several groups at a show are operating they can operate on different frequencies. Without this feature I think the product falls short.
Even the old TMCC system could have the crystals replaced to allow for different frequences.
How do we know it isn't able to be changed? I think we'll find out a lot more this week. I also plan to talk to Jon Z and get as much info as I can for the LUG meeting.
Since this is claimed to have compatibility with the Legacy base, I can't even imagine that it can't change channels, that would make it all but useless! I have to believe that capability exists in this unit.

I don't know whether it has this feature or not all I said was there is no mention of it in either the catalog or the separate information sheet when you Google 37147. I tried to find the manual but it is not available on line.
I can't imagine they would design this product without this feature.
Will the the Cab-1L talk DIRESCT to PowerMasters? will you still need the Bridge?
You will still need the bridge for all the older powermasters. But there is a new model coming out early next year that will be Legacy direct compatible.
