This 3-day weekend, The Boss and I packed up our dogs and went on a 150 mile road trip to the northern coast of California.  We stayed at the Little River Inn in Little River, California.  We did some hiking and exploringLittle River InnHeavy apps at Little River InnA Toast at the Little River InnSunset from our Inn room deckVan Damme State BeachDash at Van Damme BeachChance at Van Damme BeachWave action at Glass BeachHoin and Boin at Glass BeachPudding Creek TrestleCalifornia Western #5California Western #4California Western #8California Western #6California Western #3California Western #2California Western #1California Western #7Skunk train locomotiveSkunk Train Late Harvest Wine #1Sknk Train Red Cuvee #1 along numerous beaches between Little River and Fort Bragg, CA.  Our room deck overlooked the ocean.  We were so close we could hear the waves breaking.  Had some great gourmet food and adult beverages.  While we were in Fort Bragg we checked out the California Western Railroad.  This is an excursion train more famously known as the "Skunk Train."  Legend says it got its name because of the stinky smell from their diesel and steam locomotives.  The train runs diesel, steam and motorcar excursions on a 40-mile route thru the redwoods in Mendocino County.  I once rode it many years ago, as a kid.  We could not ride it this time because we had our dogs.  So...I just wandered thru their rail yard and took some pics.  We also shopped in their gift store.  Maybe next time...without our puppies...we'll take a ride on it.  It was a great get away with a "railroad accent."  I took all of the photos except for the running steam locomotive.  It was taken by Drew Jacksich from San Jose, CA - Calif Western June 6th 2010 024xRP, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/...x.php?curid=17930499.

My first ride (and 2nd and 3rd) behind a 1:1 steam locomotive was the Skunk some time in the early 70s.  We always took the morning steam East to Willits and then rode one of the diesel rail buses back to Fort Brag.  My family lived in the East Bay at the time.  My Dad usually planned this as the start of a week of camping done up in the redwoods, around Lake Shasta and such.  Thanks for the memories.
