MTH is now producing it's RailKing PS-3 equipped ALCo RS-3 diesels with a smoke unit.  This wasn't the case in the past.  As the title of this thread states, I'm wondering if any authorized MTH Techs and/or other knowledgeable Forum members know if a smoke unit can be added to a prior PS-2 equipped R/K RS-3 or RSD-4.  If so, would it be fairly easy to install (e.g. plug right in to the existing PS-2 boards), or would it more complex than that?  I realize the exhaust stack would also have to be drilled out.

Has anyone done this yet?  I have a couple recently-purchased older RS units that I would like to add smoke units to.  After all, what's an ALCo diesel that doesn't smoke??!!

Yes, the wire harness can be plugged into the existing PS-2 board.  The issue is location and mounting.  Is there room for the smoke unit at the stack area.  The frame needs to be drilled so the smoke unit can be mounted to the chassis.  At that point finding the right brass cup/funnel to match to the exhaust stack.  If you take a picture of the internals of your engine I can tell you if it is feasible.

I have done 3 recent Atlas Diesel Upgrades to PS-2 and smoke from TMCC/RS.  I add the smoke unit first and than place the boards in the remaining area.  G
