I need to replace the two items (I think are diodes) on the PS2 Tender Plug Boiler Connector. They are the size of a resistor, all black with a single silver band on one end. There is some printing on them that looks like 1008 over N4004. Thanks for any responses.

1N4004 Diodes. They are available from any electronics parts suppliers.
When installing these diodes does it matter what direction they are installed?
Yes. The silver band is the positional indicator.
FWIW, 1008 is the date code, manufactured in the 10th month of 2008.
The banded ends are tied together and create PV in the engine from the two motor leads. The unbanded ends connect one each to of the motor leads.
Thanks for the responses, I now have enough info to replace the diodes. When I originally did the PS2 install everything worked well. As suggested in the instructions I left everything unattached to the frame and boiler. It was when I attached the Tender Plug Boiler Connector to the frame that a dead short was created. After investigation I discovered that the soldered pad (with no wires attached) was too large and contacted the screwhead holding the board in place. Made fiber washers to go between screwheads & board from the spacer provided. Go figure.
1N4004 is one of a series of general purpose diodes which only differ in their voltage ratings...

as a general rule of thumb, most part numbers that begin with "1N" (indicating a single junction) are diodes while most parts that begin with a "2N" (for two-junction) will be transistors.
