Can the DCS system run conventional lionel locomotives by regulating the track power?

Yes, it can, right out of the box. No additional equipment is required.

Also I heard that you can run legacy equipped rollingstock with some sort of control box.

You can operate both TMCC and Legacy engines (in TMCC mode), or any Legacy rolling stock that operates like an engine, with the addition of a TMCC or Legacy command base and an MTH cable.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

When I figured out how the DCS variable channel worked I had a blast running my old conventional engines. I run them fairly often now because of how easy and well they run by DCS. I just put a few toggle switches on some sidings so I don't have to remove command engines from the track to run conventional. Enjoy those conventional trains...they have a lot to offer.

Jeff I have 2 conventional sets. I plan on buying the new modern era units, and I don't want to have a traditional transformer laying out. I plan on buying the lionel 180watt brick. I saw the adapter that allows you to connect the brick to the TIU. That's should be enough power to start with. Also if I need more power I can plug up to 4 power supplies to the TIU correct?
