Ah, the 11705. My first "collector series" train set. Bought it new back in '88 from Train World.
Yes, the SD40 has Pullmor motors. It pre-dates the era of flywheel can motors in the Lionel lineup. For that reason it's a bit chubby so far as the hood width.
You can see my example running on my test track below:
In this video, I have it pulling two extra dummies and a total of 20 cars. The horn is all the sound that comes with the engine. The prime mover sound comes from a Roanoke Electronics sound board installed in one of the dummy units.
A lovely set--when I first pulled 8201 & 8204 out of their boxes, I thought they were the greatest locomotives I'd ever seen. A bit of a power hog, but awesome nonetheless. Enjoyed the video!
Dang that is a good slow start PCJ!! Couple of questions:
How many units are powered (how many motors, total)?
What kind of power supply are you using?
Way to show what the ol' Pullmor can do!
Thx for sharing,
Ted
Only the lead unit is powered, with twin Pullmors. The trailing units are dummies, one with an aftermarket sound system installed. Power was supplied by a Z-1000 transformer. At the time I didn't have any command control capability.
