by the kind of smoke units one finds MTH and Lionel locomotives? I like the Williams steam locos and can even put up with their old Tru Blast sound systems. But I don't appreciate the way smoke fluid is "spritzed" out over the engine and the duration of the smoke before a refill is necessary. The possibility that the older Williams by Bachman may be blown out with the advent of their new sound system makes them desirable, but only if the smoke units can be replaced. Dick

Dick, this is a gripe with many of us. I purchased some rebuilt Lionel smoke units for this purpose from someone here and can't remember off hand his name, but he or someone will chime in with it.
It's a great upgrade. He does special ones for the scale Hudsons too, so you need to let him know what locos you are doing.
I put a MTH unit in a couple of engines now. They get converted to PS2 though for total control.

Are you looking for a total command system or just a smoke mod?? It would run in conventional but would cost more than just a smoke unit. I wonder how he gets the smoke units to chuff in time??? mechanical??
You can replace the Williams smoke unit but there might not be enuff room for a differant set-up inside the Williams engine. I tried replacing an S-2 Pennsy smoke unit on a Williams and found very little room for anything other then the Williams suethe smoke unit, so I kept the suethe smoke unit installed.

The engine in this video is a williams with a lionel fan driven smoke unit.
