I acquired an MTH DCS system at a train show a while back, it's a rev g from one of the first few runs. I recently tried to upgrade it and while the TIU updated just fine, the remote keeps giving me this error. I've made sure that all of the connections are in the right place and that I'm using a 4P4C handset cable. Is there something I'm missing, or is there an issue with my remote?

did you unplug the stereo mini cable from the TIU?
Is the remote plugged into the correct jack?
Are you SURE you're securely holding the power button on the remote for the ENTIRE update? You'll get an error if you even momentarily lose your grip in the power button. I use a clamp to hold the power button, sitting for many minutes with my thumb on the button is surprisingly difficult without losing my grip.
That's what was confusing me a bit. I get this error after the computer establishes a connection with the TIU, I wasn't aware I needed to hold down the power button then.
The instructions on the remote update screen clearly tell you to hold the power button down. It may ask you to release it, click OK, then hold it down again. Sometimes you have to do that multiple times.
However, you MUST hold the power button down during the entire update once it starts the actual download. That is a Royal PITA, so I use a clamp that does it for me and never gets tired. The update can take more than ten minutes, and your hand gets pretty tired by then.
I tried the update again a few more times, this time with a clamp holding down the power button remote the entire time. I still keep getting the "transfer to remote state" error after the computer finds the TIU.
The remote must be turned off during the operation. It will turn itself on at the appropriate time.

Follow the on-screen instructions EXACTLY!
That's the only way you're going to get the remote to update!
