8 cars derailed Satruday morning and a few cars ended up in the water. They worked for 15 hours and had the track reopened by 9:30 p.m. that night, to get traffic moving again. They replaced 172' of track. The first train through it was the #7 Amtrak.

Apparently, we are down to just two types of rail cars now; Box Cars and Tank Cars. After looking at the videos I didn't see a box car in the mix! A few covered hoppers and a center beam flat car, but no box cars.
"The Waukesha County Sheriff said the Canadian Pacific cargo train was slowing down to a stop when a box car derailed.
That caused a tanker car and seven other box cars to derail.
Only one box car was full, hauling lumber
."
I'm not going to say anything about journalism as this information came from law enforcement.

Until not to long ago it was a double Main line.
Dave, You are correct, they removed one of the mains in the late 80's or early 90's.
The "boxcar" with lumber was a center beam full of lumber.
Just listened to the radio transmission and the train set off the track detector with Hot box alarm, sticking brake and dragging equipment. The train went into emergency and started to slow down when it derailed.
I noticed one (or more?) hydraulic excavators recovering a hopper. Why no big hook?

Virtually every railroad in the U.S. got rid of they "big hook" wreckers, many, MANY years ago. Those "big hooks" were very high maintenance, even after up-graded to diesel power, and tended to be dangerous. Railroad executives found that it was far cheaper, and much faster, to call in outside contractors that specialize in such work (as that is all they do), and can open the main line much, MUCH faster with far less employees. It is truly amazing what those contractors do with those specially modified Cats with the side-booms.
Thank you, Hot H2O! I am regularly surprised by what I don’t know despite being an avid hobby reader in my superannuated years.
Was out at the derailment site a few hours ago. All the cars that derailed are all still on site, they were just pushed, pulled or lifted off the right of way so they could get the track re-layed and back opened up. Probably be in the next week or two, they have some contractor come in and clean up the cars.
I love the locals comment about the train hitting a hot box down the tracks! Moral of the story.....stop leaving hot boxes on the tracks, and this kind of thing won't happen..LOL! I also love how he refers to a covered hopper car in the pond as a tank!

Also, it’s not a freight train, but a “cargo train?” Geez. 😳
