So If I am on rt 53 at the Scheetz gas station in Cresson, how do I get to the crossing that seems to be popular with railfans?Looking at a Google map it appears to be right down the road. Is it accessible from rt.53 or do I need to drive further and access from the other side of the tracks? I may be going to Altoona, Gallitzin, and Cresson in the near future. Thanks for the info guys.

If you follow PA State Route 53 South from Cresson you cross over top of PA State Route 22.
Continue on PA State Route 53 South and you will come to the town of Lilly.
The NS main Line will be on your right as you pass thru town.
Continue on PA State Route 53 South for about 1 1/2 miles watch for the Homemade signs that say Cassandra Bridge and Overlook on the right hand side of PA State Route 53 South.
You will make a right hand turn off of PA State Route 53 South.
Just follow the signs and you will go right back to the bridge location.
If you follow PA State Route 53 south further down from Cassandra you will come to Portage that has a small but neat Museum.
Further south you will end up in Summerhill and there is a bridge that goes over the main line that has great photo opportunities.
Have fun!!!!!!!!!!
This is a nice bed and breakfast that caters to railfans. Its in Cresson PA.
you must acess the bridge from the rt53 side .its the only way into town. going south from lilly, the road to cassandra is about 2 miles. its just past a sharp curve, i drove past it the first 2 times i went there. best bet is get your room at station inn, tom has railpace maps of the west and east slopes with all locations.i consider this and the rt53 bridge north of cresson the best locations.they are building a new 53 bridge,so go after work hours,or sunday. these are great places, no general public,no rr police, just other railfans like us-jim
the cassandra bridge was old rt 53 when it went in through town . its the same bridge you can stand on over the tracks today. last time i was there, local railfans had made a small park w/ benches and cleared out the trees and brush.the road was relocated in the mid 1930s.old timers in the area tell me rt53 is a much different road today, due to the heavy coal/ stone truck traffic in the region.-jim
