cattle car doors stay open

I have acquired over time this problem. The doors close very easily by hand. I see no binding that is very evident. Sometimes they still will work properly. Manual mentions the small spring on the plunger and bending it but I am not sure which way to bend it or even if that is a solution. What do you think may help? thanks for any ideas
