Hi all , can anyone tell me if its ok to just remove the Chip from one board and insert it into another with any complications as I don't want to ruin the good board . Also I know one set of boards is definitely fried and if any here knows how to diagnose and repair and at what price

To remove the chip, the simplest and safest I've done it was to use a large paperclip. Bend the ends enough to fit into the slots on two sides and under the chip. Carefully and evenly pull out the chip. It worked every time for me. When you insert a new chip make sure it goes in evenly and snap it in.
Thanks Paul but my guestion was not how to remove the chip its are there any consequences of move one chip from its original board and replacing it with a different chip in that board So I have a chip that is from a K4 and the boards are fried I want to remove that chip and put it into a board that is good but has a diesel chip , I want to remove the diesel chip and use the good boards with the k 4 chip
First off, do NOT fool around with paperclips or screwdrivers to remove the chips from the PLCC socket! Get the proper PLCC extraction tool, they're $10 or less.
Most of the later versions of PS/1 boards will accept a different chip, I've swapped a bunch around. However, if this is an early PS/1 board, all best are off, and they're very touchy about swapping chips. I just went through a little raindance with an early board, GGG came to my rescue. If you want to know specifics, I suggest you contact him and discuss your specific situation. He's done a lot with the PS/1, and probably knows more about the board level than anyone else here.

Thanks John it was an early penK4 loco which I fried badly as it was smoking so I wanted to pull the chip and put it into a different board which also was an early model that I bought on eBay That was for a Santa Fe diesel proto 1 I put it into a tender and the sound works fine forward and reverse also. What can happen if I put the K4 chip in the good board to see if it's still good
Post some pictures of the boards. Swapping chips on later models 1997 and up not an issue. Early ones can be. Also matters if 1 meg or 2 meg chip. G
Welcome to the party George, I was hoping you'd show up.
Board for the k 4 was on the list from MTH as having the potential to go bad if battery went dead I have had this for many years and have just bought the good board and I don't want to ruin it
The K4 chip is a 1996 chip. So it is 2Meg. Picture of the K4 board? The board is not the issue with list engines, it is the software on the chip (K4 chip in this case). So if you use it with a new board, it will work, but it you windup with a weak battery it can cause a software ID error that will lock the engine out. You can reprogram the locked board with a special chip, or you purchase a new K4 chip from MTH and they provide one that has newer software that won't allow an ID Conflict. It reprograms the board and restores operation. G
Well guys after all this trouble the K4 Chip is dead But I want to Thank you GGG and you to John for your help THE GUY with the Clip idea well you should invest in a chip puller
