Anybody ever dyed or painted walnut shell to change the color from the natural brown to gray or blended gray?
Not I...but a company called "Woodland Scenics" has done it rather successfully.
Have a great day at the shop!

Cheryl,
I mixed it in a big bucket with greatly thinned, gray flat latex paint, then spread it out to dry on metal sheets. Worked fine, but was a bit of a pain to break up clumps after drying. Did some different shades to vary the color on different parts of the layout.
Too much work - so, lately, I've been letting Woodland Scenics do the coloring as KD said.

I've never used walnut shells, but I have changed the colors of all kinds of things (including stone ballast material) using ink/alcohol mix. Just put some in a jar with the target material, tighten the lid and shake. No clumping. N.B.: Ink can be had in many colors.

Jim,
I've heard of a similar technique, but adding the use of a blender to break up the clumps. Thanks for the input.
I just add a few drops of color to my white glue/alchol ballast setting mixture and change colors on the glue down pass. Russ
