I would like to know if it is possible to charge a new 2.4v battery using the mth wall charger, or does the battery have to be in the locomotive and then charged through the connector on the bottom of the engine with the wall charger. This is just for future possibilities.

You can plug it directly in, the connectors match. I charge them before I do a PS/2 upgrade, that insures I have a fully charged battery when I finish and want to test.

When replacing the 8.4v battery, is it better to charge the battery before installation or can you install the battery and put the loco on the track, turn on the power thru the tiu and charge the battery for the required time and then test the engine. I have tried to find some parts at radio shack to make an adaptor for my MTH battery charger to charge a 8.4v battery but didn't find the part to plug the round connector into. I found a page showing how to make the terminal to attach to the 8.4v battery but not the female dc connector. Is there a 9v battery charger that is safe to charge the MTH 8.4v batteries other than the MTH wall charger
I normally try to have them charged. I use the harness plug and connector on the MTH charger to charge the 8.4V ones before installation. It just eliminates one potential issue.
Pretty much any NiCad or NiHm charger can work. I use an older one for batch charging. You just don't want any of those specialty chargers that charge at high amps for quick charge.
If anyone needs a 5V charge harness to use with the MTH charger I have them. G
I have several of those charging harnesses, I get one whenever I have to put new boards in a 5V locomotive that's croaked.

Do you guys think this charger would work for the green batteries ?
Sure for the 8.4V ones, but not for the 2.4V batteries obviously.
