Most know that the N&W CPLs, as group, are on borrowed time. The currently most accessible group of signals are on the Roanoke District, part of Norfolk Southern's H-line from Hagerstown to Roanoke. Some also remain on the Whitethorne and Altavista Districts, and on irregularly used mine branches in southwestern VA.

In fall 2022, I spent two days capturing signals between Elkton and Roanoke. Of the signals in this video, Waynesboro and Buena Vista have fallen my August 2022. I chased manifest 13Z, one of four total through freights that use the entire line in a 24-hour period. Locals work parts of the route between Shenandoah - Hagerstown and Glasgow - Roanoke, and occasionally unit trains will take this line to avoid delaying the intermodals that use the former Southern Piedmont and Danville lines.

Dan,
It is good to see someone taking photos of my old stomping grounds (40+ yrs.). So, let me correct a few things in the way you have them labeled.

The first scene is the siding between control points "Island Ford" on the south end and "Stonewall" on the north end. It sits about a half mile from Merck & Co.'s "Stonewall" plant, which in turn is a few miles south of the town of Elkton. The siding basically is across from the Coors/Miller beer plant. The train is at the "Stonewall" signal heading north.

Further south the next siding sits between the control points "Lewis Run" on the north end and "Lynnwood" on the south end. The siding and area are both known as "Lynnwood". It is just north of Port Republic, Va. and is part of the Civil War Port Republic battlefield. Not even close to Waynesboro.

The last segment (Wert Faukner Hwy.) is the community of "Natural Bridge Station". You are filming toward a small place that we called "Graves". A short way behind you and around the curve would have been the actual N&W Station for Natural Bridge and the bridge crossing the James River with the CSX below. A famous O. Winston Link photo was taken there.

It appears, judging by the new construction, that it won't be too long before the CPL at Buena Vista is taken down!

Thanks for the photos!
