One of my irregularly-pursued objectives in shooting trains is to capture as many cowl-bodied or cab units in service as I can, given the slow but steady rate that they are retired in favor of hood units or supplanted by modern monocoque and full-bodied passenger power. My definition of "classic" spans from the EMD and Alco cab units to the 1980s GMD, EMD, and GE products built mostly for Canada and US commuter operators. In June, after swinging through the northeastern US, I crossed into Canada and visited Montreal and Toronto before heading to the WNYP. While I hoped to see some of CN's legendary GP9RMs, the primary purpose of my visit was to capture F59PHs on GO Transit and Montreal's EXO/AMT while they were still in regular service. Thanks to the assistance of some awesome local railfans, I successfully intercepted the F59PHs of both roads. Time permitting, I'll hopefully get the F59s of Chicago, the Triangle, and Dallas on subsequent trips! If you know of any tourist railroads rostering F units or Alco FA/FPAs, I'm open to suggestions.
