Saw it on the TV news last night. However, in my opinion, that isn't the only thing that is "disintegrating" in Chicago!
The main station appears to me to be in good shape, but the train shed (where this took place) has always seemed to me to be aging not as well. If nothing else, this should light a fire under management.
"At this point, she has no plans to take legal action." Well, this took place about 24 hours ago. Just wait.
Well, Chicago Union Station is 91 years old - and probably not all that well capitalized under Amtrak ownership.
Considering Chicago's weather, which can go from sub zero temps to Houston style heat and humidity within a year, it is amazing the sheds have help up that long. Time for a redo!

So, are you saying that she would be wrong, to expect some sort of compensation?
She was NOT doing anything negligent, illegal, or trespassing, just walking through the station, not expecting to have pieces of concrete hitting her on the head causing profuse bleeding, and according to the report, a possibly fractured skull, sounds pretty painful to me. Add to that, the needed repairs were known to management, who according to the report, failed to take any action about the defects.
Sounds to ME, like she deserves some adequate compensation, maybe not MILLIONS, but definitely MORE than a monthly transit pass.
I personally would be pursuing some compensation, if that had been me.

No, Doug, my comment was not directed at her right to compensation, which she of course has. I was more amused by the video news report itself, where the reporter made that statement. Around here, local news reports always say something like that initially, and then the inevitable lawsuit is filed.
By the way, the injured woman is an attorney, as is the woman who first assisted her, according to the longer report that was on the Chicago Rail Yahoo group yesterday.
I was just in Union Station last week. They are spending millions on many upgrades.I feel bad for the lady that got hurt by decaying infrastructure.I assume that problem will be corrected. On a related note,it was a wind storm in the Windy city last week when I was there.I worried about debris blowing off buildings onto my head.I would think there are inspectors looking out for public safety, but this incident shows that that is not really the case.I will go to the station again, but be on my guard, like everywhere else I travel to.
