This recording is an annual favorite of mine to listen to on Christmas Eve.  Famous railroad photographer O. Winston Link eternalized the arrival and departure of N&W J Class 603 and its train "The Pelican" in Rural Retreat, VA on Dec 24, 1957 with this audio recording.  He arranged for the church bells to play Christmas carols throughout the sequence.  There's something special about hearing the locomotive and train roar past and then thunder off into the night.

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for posting this. It was very much enjoyed.

What a talent O Winston Link was.

This gives me a chance to tell my favorite OWL story...I guess it was the late 1990's early 2000's when I briefly belonged to a group of railfans trying to rescue a few N&W steam locomotives from a Roanoke scrapyard. I knew he lived near me in Westchester County, NY, so I wrote to him and asked if he would be interested in helping to save these locomotives. He wrote me back, with this funny letter, on his photography studio's letterhead, basically saying, "Thanks for offering to take the remaining years left in my life...!"

So, I had his letter framed and it is mounted on my favorite O&W print of his, Seven-Mile Ford. This is appropriate for today as the father (guessing) of the young boy in the left foreground is holding a freshly cut Christmas tree. The print and letter hang in my office and I have a duplicate set at home, since I liked it so much.
