Which disappears at higher speeds/rpm, as does the separate "chuff" of any reciprocating engine of any kind (gas, diesel, steam). A steamer at 60 mph essentially just has a roar, like your automobile would with no muffler. (OK, a 4+ cylinder roar is smoother than a 2-cylinder roar, but there's no chug either way.)
