My trains have been set up in a fairly damp and unsealed space, and I've noticed some mildew spots on some of my rolling stock.  These are modern plastic cars, and my K-line extruded aluminum passenger cars.  What are some safe and effective ways to clean painted plastic and aluminum surfaces?

I've since sealed the layout space and installed a dehumidifier to keep the humidity below 55%, so hopefully the problem will not recur.

What you have is mold.  Mildew is a plant related fungi that occurs on tobacco and potatoes.  That being said, the fungicide I am most familiar with is by a medical company, Steris.  They make a fungicide called Spore-cleanse.  We used it in a bioburden controlled clean room when we made medical implants.

I have not tried this fungicide on any painted plastics or aluminum (to inspect for potential damage) but it is the only cleaner of this kind I know of.
