Hi Everyone,

Our club layout is powered by a Z-4000.  It has the Legacy 1L base.  It also has DCS.  I disconnected the track wire from the 1L and connected it to my #990 base today.  I ran my Vision BB using my Cab-2.  All went well.

This is the first time a 990 base has been connected to this layout.  Everyone else that runs a Lionel engine uses the older remotes.

Is the #990 base backwards compatible with the older remotes?  If I disconnect the 1L base, and connect my 990 base to the layout, will everyone else be able to run their engines using the older remotes (while I use my Cab-2 remote)?

For the Cab 1 remotes to work, you must use the Y cable included in the 990 Legacy Set, and hook up the Cab 1 base. Read the Legacy Instructions Manual as it’s very clear. When hooking up the cab1 base, you do not connect the outside ground rail, Only to the Legacy base.  I am not an electrical guru, but there are different frequencies involved here....Good Luck, Happy Railroading..

Ok, I did not read the post correctly, I thought Cab 1....In Looking back, I see Cab1L.  So, no extra base necessary. Forgive me for my oversight. Happy Railroading.

I'll tell ya . . . for someone who understands electronics, getting into these Lionel electronics for the first time is rather confusing.

PowerHouses and PowerMasters say they both "supply track power."  So it sounds like they are both transformers.  But they're not.  It took me awhile to "find" out they're very different, and what they do.

The Legacy Control System (V1.6) Manual, page 8, talks about, and shows illustrations to operate Cab-1 remotes and Cab-2 remotes at the same time:  Connecting them together using the cable that comes with the LCS, to a TMCC Command Base.  That TMCC Base looks likes the 1L base to me.  But the note says "Base 1L should not be used on a layout already utilizing a LEGACY base."  It took me quite awhile to research, and figure out, that a TMCC Command Base is not a 1L base.  https://www.lionelsupport.com/...0LEGACYv16Manual.pdf

The Cab-1L and Base 1L Manual says, "If you already have a LEGACY Base (6-14295), you can simply add one or more CAB-1L remotes to your existing LEGACY layout—no need for the Base-1L."

"You may use a combination of LEGACY CAB-2 and CAB-1L remotes with a single LEGACY Base. However, only CAB-1L’s may be used with the Base-1L. NOTE:  Only one Base (either the LEGACY Base or the Base-1L) should be used on a layout. Only CAB-1Ls may be used with the Base-1L."  https://www.lionelsupport.com/...7250CABandBASE1L.pdf

End result:  I found my answer:  I will remove the 1L Base and connect my LCS Base.  That will allow the existing Cab-1L remotes and my Cab-2 remote to be used at the same time.
