What is striking to me is the very small difference in price between the sets and cars in "kit" form versus those same sets and cars in "RTR" form!

I wonder if that's due to the time/effort it takes to sort and package parts and instructions. The original CMC/CMT kits that I have had the chance to assemble include just enough individually wrapped painted parts and small bags of nuts/bolts/screws to make me think that it may have almost been easier for the manufacturer to build the RTR version.
