Does anyone have any experience with CMC classic model kits? I am looking at a unasembeled kit and wonder what the quality level would be.

I recently built 3 Milwaukee Road Coaches. It went together pretty easily and was fun to build. What do you mean by "quality level?" Thee kits turn out the same as the ones that were sold preassembled.
I have a CMT 2-6-0 engine that was assembled by the original buyer in 1976. Engine runs very well, paint is still very good. Quality and operation compares very favorably to McCoy and exceeds early Lionel steam engines. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase and assemble one assuming I had the instruction sheet.
The locomotives can be a bit tricky, but not hard to assemble. You also need to get the gear spacing correct or the gears will wear poorly.

Stew, I neglected to offer you a copy of my instructions for assembling the CMT 2-6-0 engine, should you need it.
would love to see some pictures !
First a correction - my engine was made by CMC, not CMT!
A picture of my CMC Mogul, manufactured 10-75 and assembled from a kit. It's the AC version, using diodes to provide DC current to the Pittman motor. The toggle switch reverse is visible under frame below the cab.
In November 1975 the price of this engine kit was $155 plus $2 shipping.
This Bi-Centennial engine was acquired with three CMC Bi-Centennial passenger cars - two coaches marked Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, and an observation car marked Ben Franklin. These cars are about the same size as the Lionel 18/19/190 series cars, but of much lighter construction. They were not included with the engine kit described above.
The CMC unassembled in original box sold at auction for $460.00. I did not realize the collectible value of this kit. It was a 4-6-0 with tender. While chatting with another train fella we wondered if the kit would be assembled or left in the box. It really looked like a neat build project.
It will be built. Not a high priority, but it will get done.
It's a shame you don't have any freight cars for it to pull...
these cars are the best check it out

Speaking of CMC kits...I put together this CMC Strasburg RR car, #92 Paradise this afternoon while watching NFL playoffs. Having grown up just south of the Strasburg on Paradise Lane, these CMC kits have more sentimental than collector value to me.
One more Strasburg car, two more Bicentennial cars and a set of three Milwaukee Road cars with vestibules remain to be assembled. Might even do a loco kit someday if I can find/buy one!

The Strasburg cars were the first CMC kits I built.

I like the clerestory window backing. Was that an addition or did that come with the kit? Mine were already put together and do not have that.

Joe - I added that to the kits - you can buy it in sheets and cut strips to fit. I think I purchased mine on ebay. An 8 1/2 x 11 sheet will do several cars.

It looks good Rob.

My two cents worth,
For years we had standard gauge trains Lionel Flyer Ives and a few Mc Coy , Even had a fairly large operating standard gauge layout . But we have moved on. sold most of the standard gauge , keep the Marx.
However I find these new cars very interesting and they seem to be built in the spirit of the standard gauge I recall If they were offered in a kit form with a locomotive i myself would be very interested in the purchase of several .I think it would be fun.
again just my two cents worth. Gary

Gary, assembly of the original kits is fun, but from a production standpoint, a bit too time consuming to assemble and make money. The new CMT cars were redesigned to allow spot welded, so not practical to put in kit form.

This is the CMC Mogul picture requested a couple of weeks ago.
Came through fine. I have that one with the passenger cars, as well as a set of the car kits that have not been assembled.
