Running my Mogul with three Bicentennial coaches on 42" curves generates wheel slip also. The track must be absolutely clean and dry and it still spins some. Between tight curves and three heavy cars there is a lot of drag. And the motor does warm up a bit - takes about 16 - 17 volts to keep it up to a speed such that momentum can help with the curves.

Those passenger cars are comparatively heavy. With a caboose and one boxcar it seems to just coast along without any strain with 12 volts.
