CMC classic model SP 4-6-0 kit, First Run

Steve -- nice work on the kit.  That is perhaps the smoothest running CMC I've seen.  Looks great, runs great.  Nice cars! 

Have you had a chance to test the loco's pulling capacity yet? How many cars will it haul?

The previous owner of the kit would most certainly approve!

Thanks Rob. I’ll have to add a few more cars and see bout it does, but remember, it really only has two wheel drive.

i did order five more PFE reefers to go with it, as well as a special order SP caboose.

I ran it today at TTOS on 72" curves and it would only pull 4 cars. I expected more. Adding a fifth car caused excessive wheel slip. The darn thing is just not heavy enough. Before I try adding weight, I will try adding a traction tire. I'd like to run 5-6 cars plus the caboose if possible.

Running my Mogul with three Bicentennial coaches on 42" curves generates wheel slip also. The track must be absolutely clean and dry and it still spins some. Between tight curves and three heavy cars there is a lot of drag. And the motor does warm up a bit - takes about 16 - 17 volts to keep it up to a speed such that momentum can help with the curves.

Those passenger cars are comparatively heavy. With a caboose and one boxcar it seems to just coast along without any strain with 12 volts.
