The roof was packed in a plastic bag that adhered to it and damaged the paint.

BEAUTIFUL ENGINE! Try a micro scratch remover compound and apply it with a micro fiber cloth. Do a test spot on the underside of the cab roof first!
Try an auto parts store - there is one brand in an orange squeeze container that works well on modern tinplate. Good luck!

Glad you got it Steve. I thought about bidding on it, but hesitated. This is one of the nicest 4-6-0's I've seen, just great that, for the most part, it is like new. Runs nice too.
