Do you really think he'll see actual prison time?  Nobody got hurt in this incident, and it seems to me that violent (person-harming) criminals are just getting probation these days.

Crimes committed on/with railroad equipment or property are a serious Federal Offense. This individual will also face charges of reckless endangerment, theft of equipment, vandalism, willful destruction of property, evading arrest, operating a locomotive without certification, operating over a posted safe speed limit, and probably 20 other charges. If found guilty you can bet he will be sentenced and imprisoned for a long time or locked up in a mental institution.

Yes, and the prosecutor will drop three quarters of the charges, plead him down on the rest, and he will receive concurrent sentencing. He'll be out in 3.5 to 8, but probably earlier if he goes around talking to troubled teens and helps paint the church.

The all the coal plants where I delivered trains have split point derails, one has a powered split point derail. At least a contractor cannot pull out on to the main there unless the dispatcher lines the switch and derail together.

But, I just loaded coal in Illinois and that line has a direct connection to the main, in fact during most of the loading the train is on the main track. Even though it is a branch line and even though a railroad crew does the loading, nutty people can do a lot of harm.

I was working on the NS when all the new regulations were put into place following the Ca. commuter train accident. I remember hearing that violation carried a $17,000.00 fine as part of the punishment!

I agree with gunrunnerjohn.  No one was harmed, drugs or guns were not involved. Not domestic violence or terrorism. Slap on the wrist and the rest is up to the insurance companies.

Not judging the goodness or badness or rightness or wrongness of that just the way it is idness.

About 5 years ago I witnessed 3 people absolutely destroy a big Mercedes with bats and the then set it on fire.  Police response when I called them?  Don't bother us, it's an insurance company issue.
