The coil couplers on my Lionel 6-28536 Rock Island GP-7, which has a Pullmor motor and TMCC, have stopped working. When I trigger the front or rear coil coupler, RailSounds gives me the sound of a coupler releasing, but both couplers are dead, as if they are not receiving any power whatsoever. All other functions on the locomotive are operating normally. Any ideas?

Did you reprogram the engine? Follow the two wires from the coupler to where they end at a plug. Pull the plug from the board and hit the wires in the plug with 10 volts AC. Do both and you will know if you have a coupler issue if the reset did not put you back in business.
Could be a bunch of things, but first make sure that you have 16-18 volts going to the track from your transformer.
Then do a restore/reset of the TMCC electronics. The instructions will be in your locomotive manual. The reset code for that locomotive is 5.
If that doesn't change anything, remove and re-seat the R2LC radio board inside the locomotive. Try the couplers again.
Lastly, if you happen to have another TMCC locomotive from that era handy, swap out the R2LC board with a known good one. If the couplers work with a new R2LC board, then that's your problem.

The reset code is 8 not 5. If you need to try another R2LC, use the code C-08. Trying another R2LC is always a good idea. Do the reset first with reset code number 8. On your R2LC, the rear coupler outputs are pins 7 and 8. The front coupler pins 11 and 12.
Strobe lite and no smoke 5 would be correct. The 8 came from the owners manual. Strobe and smoke was not talked about. Follow the same path to reprogram.

Reprogramming the engine with code 5 fixed the problem with the coil couplers. (By the way, the owner's manual does have the wrong code.)
