I'm cautiously optimistic that I can complete a project (with help from @gunrunnerjohn) to install a Lionel RCM2 board in a little Lionel 18981 Speeder and put it under command control.  I've actually got it to run with my CAB1-L and Base1-L, I just need some time to do wire management.  Hopefully by the end of next week.

I have command control in all my engines I care about, except for my venerable 671RR.  It's the same as a 681 (which I also have) but without the magnetraction.  I would like to put command control in the 671, but I'm not sure what components I would need.  A project like that was discussed in this thread started by @BillYo414, but he never finished it.  The post in that thread by @GregR looks very promising.  I wonder if he finished it.

In any case, if I put in a board to do command control, I imagine the e-unit is superfluous, right?

Thanks @gunrunnerjohn.  Yeah, I was hoping not to do a motor transplant, the 70 year old one is running pretty good.  I am really not a big fan of sound options for anything.  So would an ERR AC Commander by itself work well?  I only want to be able to control the speed and direction of the locomotive.  I'm fine with having the smoke unit always on through track power, but if there's a way to turn it off and on through the board I guess that'd be cool.

@BillYo414,

I wish you luck on whatever you decide.  Once I finish the Speeder, I do want to tackle the 681.  I bought that guy at a Stout auction, runs great and is in excellent shape, but I have no emotional attachment to that one.  If I'm successful with it, I'll probably take on my original 671RR so it won't feel lonely with no command control and all its buddies have it.
