I recently inherited a set of Marx Commodore Vanderbilt trains from my father. They were his from when he was a child. Can anyone give me assistance in determining there age?

Very cool. Nice looking train. I am sure a more knowledgeable forum member will be able to help you out with dating your set. Findoggy
It's prewar. The postwar ones had different wheels and pickup.
It would be great to see pictures of the rest of the set, including bottom views of everything.
If you search Steve "Papa" Eastman here on the forum he can tell you anything you want to know about Marx.
RR,
I agree Steve is the man when it comes to Marx Tin

Judging by the 10 spoke drives, most likely a late prewar version of the 597. Postwar versions usually had the Baldwin type drivers. Marx made the CV from 1934-52. Quite a long production run.

That is prewar, the drive is different than on my postwar 495. I know they are different engines, but they had the same mechanism
Thanks for all your replies!! I had taken the engine to a local train center and they did a "tune-up" and replaced one driver. At first it ran pretty good but now it barely moves in forward and runs like a bear in reverse. Hopefully it's nothing major, I'd really like to have these running for Xmas. Thanks again for all your input!
