IMG_3521IMG_3520IMG_3510IMG_3518IMG_3517A few more from Chicago before the July 4th tourists take over for baseball, fireworks and NASCAR!! The view out of an office building shows all of the Canadian wildfire smoke that is blanketing the region. It smells like a campfire

The video shows the great view you get from the upper deck of the Metra cars. Ever wonder what was in those gondolas as they pass by?

What car is this?  I did the California Zephyr and don't recall any superliners with two levels of huge windows like this.

Is this a new superliner car?

Amtrak Sightseer Lounge

While railfanning, I have seen them on the California Zephyr for at least the last 10 years and most of these lounges that I saw had the older Superliner 1, style trucks on them. So, they had to be a few decades old.

These are just my opinion.

Yes, the lounge cars have been on the Chicago to west coast routes for decades. I rode on one as a kid in the ‘80’s. It’s hard to see in the pic, but there are also windows on the roof so you can look up at the sky or look up to see the mountains. They only run one of these cars per train and once moving the seats in there are unreserved and first come, first served. Here is a pic with better lighting so you can see the roof top windows.

IMG_3573IMG_3570IMG_3572IMG_3565IMG_3564Friday July 7 was a super busy day at CUS. Lots of summer tourist traffic. The lines for food (Chick Fil A, Sbarro, McDonald’s, Starbucks) were long and the crowds were upbeat and excited to be headed out on adventures in the city or somewhere across the country. I actually enjoy these super busy days instead of the days that are mostly commuters since the energy level and excitement is much higher for tourists than us dreary business people quietly marching to the office!! I didn’t take any pictures of the crowds, but you can see by the number of bags and Amtrak workers loading up one baggage car the trains were packed.
