Both are pretty visually impactful . Think Lionel takes it with the Fireball logo. This is the Lionel WM from the 2003 Lionel set, and the RK WM GP7 from open stock.

Sorry, I think the pilot detail and handrails make the RailKing model much nicer. I like the WM logo on the front too. The fireball scheme is a nice one though.
I prefer the RK for several reasons, the pilot details, the speed-lettering among others. One complaint on the RK; no airhorn! Well, unless it is on the side that you did not photograph, it is not visible in the top view. Also too bad that they share the same road number. If it were available in the 3-2 configuration, I would probably get the RK version.
RK model hands down.
What about electronics? Is this TMCC/Railsounds vs. PS2/3?
The Lionel with the very striking Fireball logo makes all the difference in the world. It makes the model stand out. The "Western Maryland" script is clearer on the Lionel model as well.
The Lionel handrails are a deal killer for me.

You do have point there. MTH wins the handrail comparison. I also like the engineer figure on the MTH model.
Also note all of the rivet detail lacking on the Lionel model. The RK model has an EMD builder’s plate and some nice paint details on the fuel tank too.
It’s unfortunate they are both #23.

The Lionel Geep has an electronic horn; no other upgraded features. I believe, and am willing to be corrected, that this loco, along with the RN 5910 C&O, were Lionel’s first forays into the use of vertical can motors. I’ve never had either shell off, but don’t believe they have flywheels, as they stop very abruptly.

These two model locos are from quite different eras (the designs, anyway), and the comparison is something of an apples-and-oranges situation.
D500 has a good point. The Lionel geep was clearly intended at some point to be reminiscent of Lionel postwar locomotives, if not using the same tooling. While the MTH model is intended to be a more contemporary representation of a Geep for a more budget friendly modeler that can live with scale and detail compromises.
The Lionel Legacy would be my choice...

Thanks,

This was one road I was surprised 3rd Rail did not do. I have always had a soft spot for the Western Maryland as my Father and my Uncle both consider that their favorite road.
Both of the them being HO Varney collectors I can't tell you how many dies cast F3s I custom painted in the Fireball and the Speed Lettering scheme about 25 year ago for them.
