Looking to paint some columns on my layout to look like concrete. this will need to be brush applied and might be adding some sand to the paint for additional texture. I'll take care to the weathering later to give it an aged look.  What colors and paint brands did you use.?

  Any help here greatly appreciated.

I prefer the two color method that Bob uses. I start out with a light tan similar to Matt's khaki then use a thin black wash made of 1:10 black latex to water. Concrete has a color texture to it that can't be duplicated with a single color. The sidewalks, street, and trim on the building in the center with the phone booth is front of it were done using this technique.

There really isn't just 1 correct color for concrete. So its not real critical, especially if you plan on weathering it.

I've used Floquil Concrete & Aged Concrete, Kahki flat camo spray paint, light grey primer spray, grey primer spray, and various acrylic grey paints from craft stores and Woodland Scenics.

This coaling tower was spray cans, light grey primer, grey primer, and kahki... lightly sprayed and blended together until I got the look I was happy with. Then weathered with powders and the air brush.

The concrete floor for the diesel building was brush painted with a mix of acrylics and water.

The roundhouse floor was airbrushed with a mix of Floquil Concrete & Aged Concrete, only because I didn't have enough of 1 color to do the entire floor.

The retaining wall was grey primer spray paint. Weathered with a wash of india ink and weathering powder.

The same roundhouse floor changed color under the warm LED lighting.

Several concrete colors in this picture.... The roundhouse was brush painted with Kahki from Apple Barrel craft acrylic from Walmart. This Kahki is VERY different from the Kahki Camo spray paint. I wanted a "painted" concrete look here.

The diesel building in the back right was spray painted with the Kahki Camo paint. Notice the difference between the diesel building and the roundhouse.. both Kahki.

The turntable pit and walls... Floquil Concrete airbrushed and weathered.

The footings for the water tower were brushed with Pewter Grey craft acrylic.

I use Rustoleum flat in cans, too, for concrete and asphalt.  I  buy the small cans and mix it myself and just keep this in mind: concrete starts out almost white and weathers browner/yellower/dirtier, asphalt starts out very dark (but not black) and tends toward dirty gray.  New concrete I do with white (one full can) and a trace of yellow (one to two drops) and brown (same) - adding a drop or two more of brown and black, and a tiny amount of purple (1 or two drops_) if its old (and no, I don't know why, it just works).

Two things I keep in mind:

- White gets "corrupted" by other colors very easily - all it takes is a couple of drops.

- Flats, particularly light flats, change hue noticeable as they dry.  You can't be sure what it will look like when it is first applied of even when half an hour later it might be barely dry to the touch: takes overnight to see if you matched something right.
