Ticket punches were issued by the Superintendent's Office, to Conductors and Brakemen who had passenger uniforms and were on passenger assignments or extra boards that protected vacancies in passenger service.  The design of each punch was on record, and the railroad could thus tell, by the shape of the punch hole, which Conductor or Brakeman had punched a ticket or a cash fare receipt.

There were many, many different dies for the punches.
