I have been an avid Washington baseball fan since I was a kid rooting for the old Washington Senators in Griffith Stadium and D.C. Stadium (later RFK). For the latest version of the team, the Washington Nationals, I’m an original season ticket holder and have been with the club through the ups, downs, good days and bad. And I’ve attended virtually every significant game (every Opening Day, first game at Nats Park, Strasburg debut, last year's All-Star Game, etc.) played by the Nats since they arrived in 2005. You might say that I’m all in.

Needless to say, this morning brings total elation, joy, happiness and frankly a sense of did this all really just happen.

So here’s a little O gauge nod to the -- can you believe it -- 2019 World Champion Washington Nationals !!

I wonder which company will be the first to have a 2019 World Series Boxcar available.

TOLEDOED, I would like to see the Indians in next year's World Series too, but as B. Drennan would say "all bets are off."

Since I had no real connection to either team, I decided I wanted the Nationals to win because they had two traded away former Indian players on their WS roster while the Astros had one Indian's free agent (that I know of).

Yep.  Seriously rooting for Washington.  A strange series, but, I'm happy for the World Champions.

Too bad about those houstons.  Gee, no bat flips from them, no hands to the ears, no carrying the bat to first base.  IMO, a few jerks on that team, and a whole bunch of talking heads eating crow this AM.

Don't follow the Nationals closely due to geographically limited opportunites to watch them play in the regular season and no MLB subscription but was thoroughly impressed throughout the postseason.  Saw this jab on Twitter:  "I called Bryce Harper's phone, but there was NO RING."

What, me worry?

Now that's funny.

For those that don't get the reference, Harper infamously said a few years ago before the season started, "...where's my ring bro?"

Having rooted for the "other" ny team since 62.. taking the 7 train ( required train reference!)

but a full season ticket holder 1985-2007, I understand the joy you feel with the win. Was there in 86 and don't care if they ever win again! nothing like being there for all those game.  And thank you for sending us Gil Hodges to manage in 69!

I was happy the Nationals won, that Zimmerman got to experience it as the last of the Mohicans (an original National from its first season I believe). Nothing against the Astros, but it is nice when a team gets that first championship. Plus I was happy it was an NL east team that won it, I am hoping it is causing the owners of the franchise I root for a lot of agida and envy, and makes them actually want to put a team on the field designed to win a championship, not 'compete', whatever that means

Remember Hodges managing the Senators well. Wasn't he actually "traded" to the Mets for a player? For some reason that is rattling around in my head.

I have two major pastimes:  Trains, and baseball.

So happy about the Nationals whipping those drug infested, smug, houstons.

Bigkid, Zimmerman deserves everything he got.  Good player, good guy.

Bptbill, those Metsies (Casey Stengel) now have a solid core.  Ignoring Girardi and Showalter is a foolish mistake.  I'm one Yankee fan who also roots for the Mets.  Those boys just can't seem to make good organizational decisions.  Unless I miss my guess, Brodie is a narcissistic loser.

Yanks need to get over the Alex Rodriguez stigma and pay up for Cole, as long as he brings the "magic sauce" with him.  No newcomer, the guy was with Pittsburgh for 6 years.  Like Verlander, Morton, Miley, all of a sudden, he got twice as good.  Talking heads say it's superior coaching.  Yeah, suuurrre.  You think Yanks, sawks, Mets, and the rest, can't read as good as those houstons?  hahaha

Back to trains....

John,

Yes.  Hodges was traded for some pitcher, who never amounted to much.  Can't remember his name.  Gil never came close to finishing  .500 with the old Senators.  Was there for 4 or 5 years.  I think he was followed by none other than Teddy Ballgame in Washington.

Of course, Gil's fortunes turned around quickly once he was back in New York.  Tom Seaver may have had something to do with that....

Found this...

On Nov. 27, 1967, the Mets acquired Washington Senators manager Gil Hodges for $100,000 and righthander Bill Denehy, whose other claim to fame is being pictured with Tom Seaver on Topps’ “1967 Mets Rookie Stars” card.

That card, in good condition, is valued well over $100,000. Hodges’ value to the ’69 Mets? Priceless.

Great stuff. I thought I remembered that rare manager for a player deal.

I think there was another manager after Hodges but before Ted Williams. Maybe Jim Lemon?

Teddy famously managed the Senators to an above .500 record in 1969 and that was an amazing feat for those woeful Senators. In fact it was their only over .500 finish in something like 15 years.

I also love baseball and trains, and rooting for the Yankees in my DNA, but after they were eliminated, I was thrilled to see the Washington Nationals go all the way.

It took them 95 years to win another World Series after winning one in 1924 with the great Walter Johnson (was his nickname the Big Train?).  Arnold

Arnold,

That is correct. Walter Johnson's nickname was The Big Train.

Johnson is buried about 30 minutes from me in Rockville, Maryland and today I received the following picture of his grave adorned with some Washington baseball items following the big win the other night.

I’m a Braves fan but; a tip of my hat and a sincere congratulations to the Nat’s!

And I’ll concur with a few earlier posters in that I was happy to see Zim “get his ring”. He’s always been a top notch guy and one of those players on a competing team you can actually respect.

Curt

Curt, I'll see you a Zimmerman and raise you a Freeman. The Nats fans I know really like Freddie. One of those guys we always wish was on our roster.
