Hopefully I posted this in the best form possible

I have a couple of Atlas O 3 rail GP60s, and I would like to do some upgrades to them. Mainly, I would like smoother control rather than the 32 speed steps that comes with TMCC engines. In a perfect world, I could throw legacy in them, but I'm not sure how possible that is. So, what sort of options are there (if any) for legacy swaps or smoother speed control?

I also have 2 conventional Weaver brass steam engines that I would like to do the same thing with. I already know about doing TMCC/ERR swaps that can be done in those locomotives, but the same question remains, is there a way I can Install legacy controls and features?

From what I've read on some older forum posts, it seems do-able, but the instructions aren't very clear. I also know Sid at Sid's Trains was able to install Legacy, whistle steam, and a swinging bell in a K line engine, so it is possible right?

Its possible. A few of us have done this. The big difference vs installing ERR is there is no manual and you have to make all your own wiring harnesses. If you want it to run at the same speed as other Legacy engines then you have find a RCMC for an engine with the same gear ratio as your Atlas engine.

Thanks Pete. Sounds a little challenging, I have barely taken apart some engines before. Is there someone who does commission work for this kind of stuff, who would be able to do it right? As much as I would like to try it, I don't want to mess anything up

You have already mentioned Sid. The other person who has posted here in the past is Bruk. He has upgraded a number of engines for forum members and is highly regarded. Its much more time consuming than an ERR upgrade and parts are more expensive. I am not sure Weaver steam would be ideal candidates due their gearbox ratios being so far from what Lionel typically uses. 44:1 vs ~18:1.
