Just purchased a RS-3 lionel (produced in 2011) with railsounds and smoke. Do I have to gut the engine or can I add a commander from ElectricRR (if there is room)?

The RailSounds board will likely be a conventional RS and not command compatible. I suspect you'll have to add the Cruise Commander and RailSounds Commander for full command. If you want electrocouplers, you'll have to provide those as well.
