Recently acquired my first "real" locomotive: a 2003 MTH Great Northern SD45. Love the livery and my local shop let me have it at a great price. Not familiar with Loco-Sound but as far as I can tell it was an early version of digital technology - it has a speed control function for grades but still runs off variable track voltage. My question is can I upgrade it to more modern PS3 electronica for when I finally do upgrade to the MTH DCS system? I know you can upgrade old Lionel locomotives to their Legacy system, not sure if anyone offers anything comparable for MTH. For now the engine is running on a conventional powered short, o31 dog bone elevated loop on my 5x10 layout but eventually plan to expand the layout considerably and go all DCS.

Hi SeattleSUP,

MTH offers Proto-Sound 2 upgrade kits that are fairly easy to install in Loco-Sounds engines.  They sell for $180 ($150 to MTH club members).  They have said that PS3 kits will be coming, but they are a ways off and would actually be more difficult to install in a Loco-Sound engine than the PS2 kits (more lights to change).

FYI, Lionel does not offer Legacy upgrade kits.  They offer upgrades to TMCC, which does not include Odyssey 2 speed control or Legacy level Railsounds.
