I thought someone posted in the past how to convert these engines to conventional, but the topic must be older than six months. Need some guidance on how.

Proto sound one PS1 is conventional control it has an electronic ECRU and sound board.
As noted in the pennsyk4 post above they are Conventional. Perhaps you are thinking about the fact that they can be operated via the Cab 1 handheld remote when linked to a programmed TPC[track power controller]. No Command Base used.
My Ps-1/QSI engines always had better starting and running speed comtrol with the TPC's additional speed steps.
For running just one direction install a 6 amp or more bridge rectifier. Cost about $2.

Thanks for the info. I do not have any prior experience with these, but have seen a lot for sale at very low prices. I have heard about operational issues with the battery, 3 clanks, and the reset chip. If I get one that just won't work with the reset, or if the board is blown, can it easily be converted to run if only in one direction. Sorry I was not clear the first time, hope I make more sense this time.

If the original board goes bad, you can substitute a Williams reverse unit for about $35. No sounds, but reliable forward/reverse operation.

You could get a Williams reverse unit and a True Blast sound sound board from Marty at Ma&Pa Junction and install it yourself. That's my plan for my Pridelines UP M10000 if and when I ever get around to it I'll post my success or failure .
