I was on Amazon minding my own business when I came upon this little RC research submarine.  What caught my eye is that it looked a lot like the Lionel one you see so often.   I'm glad I found, because until I looked at it,  I didn't realize how much I needed an RC submarine.

Anyway, nowhere did the ad tell how big it is (barely six inches, it turns out--much smaller than the Lionel submarine) but I took a chance. It is a nice heavy little thing, well made, and has three motors, blue lights in front that glow nicely when it is operating, and really does dive and turn left and right, etc.  So far it has only explored only the bathtub, but it did a thorough job there!

I had some of Walter Matuch's depressed-center flatcars, labeled Coast Guard, no less, just perfect for it.  I made small mounting block to hold it firmly.  Just a nice little Saturday afternoon project.

Several of the Kellogs cereals had this as a premium. Sugar Pops was one. I remember getting all 3 baking soda items. Frogmen (3 different were first), then the Submarine, and finally the rare PT Boat. All using baking soda. The PT Boat was a failure not running very good, with the bubbles coming out the back to propel it forward. All were for a box top and .25 cents, semt to BattleCreek, Michigan.

OMG, I suddenly remember the frogmen too (but not the PT Boat, which might have been the Lionel Acela of its day by the sound of it). I don't remember them in these colors but somewhere lodged in my memory are all the other details:

Speaking of Atlantis and cereal box baking soda subs, I forgot I have one of the fish-shaped subs ("Ketak" is what I discovered they're called) from a box of the movie's namesake cereal.  It may actually be acceptably sized for O gauge trains; with a some painting and weathering, it would make a great artifact being brought back from an archaeological expedition.  (I do want to include a science museum on my future layout.)

I've also got a 1:40 scale giant squid, and an equal-sized white shark that I've intended to use as a Carcharodon megalodon.
