I can't find a "dummy" MTH Santa Fe F3-A Railking but I have found a the fully operational Proto 3.0 version. What is involved in remove the driving elements of this engine? Thanks

Basically, you just need to pull the motor(s). Pull the shell off. Depending upon the locomotive, probably a single screw on the bottom of the truck up into the motor. You can pull the boards if you want or just leave them alone.

Jon, I just completed removing drive/electronics from a powered unit. I started with removing all electronics, lights, etc., then just started removing screws from pickups, trucks and motor mount. Keeping track of which screws went where, everything came apart OK. I removed all drive gears from trucks (except wheels) and re-mounted motor mount only to truck, replaced pick-ups and lighting.

If your talking about the Rugged Rail version of the f3 they have them often on eBay. I wouldn't remove the powered parts to make a dummy if it works. I've been looking for a powered f3 with ps2 in it that works and been watching eBay for sometime. I don't know what you want to pay but there's some on all the time, its Sunday and a lot of new postings usually appear tonite. You may have to wait a little bit but I wouldn't cannibalize one just to make it a dummy.

looking at an exploded parts view, it looks like I can just remove the motors and the power pick rollers. Do the trucks roll free without the motors installed?

Yes they will roll free. The motor has a worm gear on it and the axle has a gear on it also, once the motors are out of the way there is no obstruction to it rolling free. There are gears on the sides of the trucks but the won't interfere with them free rolling. They will just roll in sync with one another.
why not just do a lashup?
Where is Farmer Bill when you need him? Or is this one too obvious?
