The section from Atlanta to New Orleans is bus service due to trackwork. I'd confirm that is done before booking your trip.

I have not done the whole route yet so cannot comment further.
I have taken the Cresent for a number of trips.....but not in the last 10 years or so. I do write about my Amtrak travels in the link below. I enjoy train travel to the point I only drive myself or go by train.
I will check to make sure the tracks are fixed before to leave from Penn station. I can change the dates that I go. Thanks Bill.

Ack! That would be an unpleasant surprise. I agree about checking for travel alerts like this.
Proper preparation prevents poor performance.
