Dear List,

Please note attached photos of the 2 railed Lionel 66' Greenbrier in the only prototype paint scheme - CSX.

I used NWSL 8893-4 36" Wheelsets. Weathering is dullcote first and various shades of crayon shavings applied directly on dullcote.

Steel slab load done by unknown modeler I picked up at a RPM convention.

Nice model of a modern era gondola.

Thank you for looking. John

Dear Pat,

Thank you!!!

While you are on the thread and your knowledge of modern equipment, I was told that CSX was the only railroad to have these Greenbrier gondolas but another poster says UP.

Could you shed some light on this 66' car in regards to the RR's (not leasing companies) that owned this car?

As a 2 rail scale guy, I am not into fantasy paint schemes.

Thank you !! John

Other railroads have them.  The reference to CSX had to do with which paint schemes and road numbers Lionel  put on their cars.  If you look back at one the original threads on the cars, there is a discussion about which schemes are correct.  If I recall correctly, the CSX and UP schemes were correct for Greenbrier/Gunderson cars with the numbers offered.  The CNW and BNSF have similar cars from other manufacurers.  In the case of BNSF, they do have the Greenbrier cars but they are in black with the swoosh logo.  They are a fairly modern car, I think built circa 2005, so there are a limited number of class 1 railroad schemes the Lionel cars would be appropriate for, plus lessor companies and shortlines.

I believe Lionel responded to earlier threads and said that the non-prototypical schemes were a concession to the economic practicalities of model train manufacturing, which makes perfect sense to me.

As to the road names offered in the next run, I know that NS has new Greenbrier cars but in the 52' length.  I see them regularly in steel service.  I can't speak to whether they have any of the 66' length cars.  The black  BNSF car looks accurate, although I haven't checked the number.  And I have no idea about the shortline roads offered.

John, I'll refer you to BigTrain Jim's post.  My modeling era stops at 1996.  A lot of the "newer" stuff all looks the same and I don't really pay attention like I used too.

Again, Nice work!

Beautiful car!! SO REALISTIC!! Do the 2 rail replacement trucks have rotating bearing caps as the 3 rail trucks do?

I'm wondering why these cars couldn't be purchased with the modeler's choice of 2 or 3 rail trucks, like The Public Delivery Track does with their Atlas cars? It's $5 more, but that's a LOT better than paying for 3 rail trucks then buying 2 rail trucks and trying to sell the 3rail.

Well, for starters, John said that he replaced wheelsets, not complete trucks.  Secondly, Lionel does not offer these cars with a choice of 2 rail or 3 rail trucks, Atlas does with their rolling stock.  It is generally difficult to offer what is not available.  Something you should be familiar to you with your shelf coupler quest.

Lionel's solution is for 2-railers to purchase their 2-Rail conversion kit (~$20) for this new truck design, which includes 2-Rail double insulated replacement roller bearing style wheelsets (also with rotating bearing caps), a narrower replacement 2-Rail plastic truck bolster and a set of electrical pickup wipers (for those inclined to add any electronic gadgetry to their rolling stock).  However, the caveat with the larger modern cars is that Lionel currently only supplies a "one size fits all" for the wheel diameter and that is 33" wheelsets, which are not correct for this 100 Ton modern car so to be more accurate the 2-Rail modeler must come up with an alternate solution if they want 36" 100 Ton wheelsets on this car, i.e. replace the wheelsets with 36" NWSL spinner style wheelsets (~$21) as Mr. Dunn (original poster) has done or replace the entire truck with one that is already equipped with 36" wheels.
