So I am thinking about adding a new Lionel engines to the stable. I always wanted one of these, but missed out last time. So this is my chance, but I Have a few questions for the CSX fan / expert.

Looks like 691 was repainted in late 2014 and 5014 was repainted in 2015 into the new modern CSX paint scheme. While reading around the web on sites it looks like these engines are being rebuild into a smaller more reliable horse power GE engines. Is that true? And are these two units rebuild to that standard extending there service life?

Also why the big number series change from one group having 690's series and the 5000's series. Are they different?

Thanks

The AC6000's are nice engines. I'm planning on getting the "Diversity" pair. Last Oct. the real engine #5000 wrecked just a couple of miles from me in Chester. Some have been rebuilt into 4400hp engines. It's cheaper to rebuild then to buy new. Hopefully someone can explain the number series. They ran from 603-699 and then 5000-5016.

From what I recall the 5000-5016 engines retain their 6000HP rating and are classified as CW60AC by CSX. About 27 units from the 600-699 series have kept their 6000HP rating and the rest were de-rated to 4400HP and classified CW44AC by CSX. Some of the 6000HP units may have had their engines replaced with 16cyl. GEVO engines which also use twin turbochargers.
